Default Book: "The End of Detroit", heard it's real good!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...213658-6201263

Highly Recommended!, December 22, 2004

"America's fascination with the auto helped build and change the entire country. But as author Micheline Maynard writes, Detroit has lost its grip on American drivers by relying on overgrown distribution systems, styling myopia, reduced quality, brand mismanagement and family ownership.

These factors, to varying degrees, combined to weaken the Big Three (Ford, General Motors and Chrysler). As an automotive journalist, Maynard apparently has all the facts, interviews and trade show vignettes to tell the story of the Big Three being replaced by non-U.S. manufacturers who simply do the job better.

She also includes interviews with car shoppers and others who are not germane to her tale. Still, this is a powerful chronicle on the threatened, imminent demise of more American icons. We find this very valuable reading for marketing and human resource professionals, corporate change management executives and anyone interested in buying a car."

Now, why would you say something like that? Even if Saab wasn't a GM subsidiary, wouldn't you want MORE competition? Competition drives prices down.

It does sound like a really good book...

...but after reading through some of the reviews here, I don't know who to believe (notice it's from Amazon.com, i.e. mostly American reviewers, and therefore may be biased). Some of the reviewers make some pretty strong statements calling into question her facts, so if a lot of it has to be taken with a grain of salt, I don't know if I'd want to read it, because I'd always have doubt about facts and such in the back of my mind. Know what I mean?
