Default Bug that excretes petrol?!

Found this while poking around on the Zombie Squad forums. My God they have some weird thinkers there.

Quote:
“Ten years ago I could never have imagined I’d be doing this,” says Greg Pal, 33, a former software executive, as he squints into the late afternoon Californian sun. “I mean, this is essentially agriculture, right? But the people I talk to – especially the ones coming out of business school – this is the one hot area everyone wants to get into.”
He means bugs. To be more precise: the genetic alteration of bugs – very, very small ones – so that when they feed on agricultural waste such as woodchips or wheat straw, they do something extraordinary. They excrete crude oil.
Unbelievably, this is not science fiction. Mr Pal holds up a small beaker of bug excretion that could, theoretically, be poured into the tank of the giant Lexus SUV next to us. Not that Mr Pal is willing to risk it just yet. He gives it a month before the first vehicle is filled up on what he calls “renewable petroleum”. After that, he grins, “it’s a brave new world”.
Mr Pal is a senior director of LS9, one of several companies in or near Silicon Valley that have spurned traditional high-tech activities such as software and networking and embarked instead on an extraordinary race to make $140-a-barrel oil (£70) from Saudi Arabia obsolete. “All of us here – everyone in this company and in this industry, are aware of the urgency,” Mr Pal says.

What is most remarkable about what they are doing is that instead of trying to reengineer the global economy – as is required, for example, for the use of hydrogen fuel – they are trying to make a product that is interchangeable with oil. The company claims that this “Oil 2.0” will not only be renewable but also carbon negative – meaning that the carbon it emits will be less than that sucked from the atmosphere by the raw materials from which it is made.

BS? It's from the Times

If not, it could be the answer to our prayers.

Discuss.

Indeed if real, that would be awesome. A new kind of fuel tank would be cool, one that has a colony inside, and automatically refills. images/smilies/lol.gif

I'd just buy several colonies of these bugs and leave it in my cas tank. Then I'll seal off the fuel filler cap so that none of them car escape.

You need hundreds of millions of them to supply a decent supply of fuel. Imagine if they all broke free. That would be a huge problem.

With this upcoming "bacteria and bugs eat biowaste and produce fuel" reports, does anyone else feel reminded of the beginning of Back to the Future 2, where Doc Brown puts a Banana and some Beer into the Delorean? images/smilies/lol.gif

though it comes to mind, what will happen if the bacteria will somehow exit the lab ? will it survive in water, thus contaminating it ?

I saw an article on this a while ago and the interviewer asked about that. The scientist said that they would also be genetically engineered to die of removed from thier environment.

Sounds nice, but how efficient is it compared to sticking a tube in the ground and having oil spurt out?

Probably very when you get to the point that nothing comes out of the tube. And they say it reduces CO2 levels too.

All sounds a bit sci-fi though, and I don't really like the idea of genetic engineering anyway. I've played Bioshock.

Would be a great way to get rid of politicians though, just chuck them into a tank of these, instead of sharks or piranhas. very James Bond!

I really wish this works out, but i have a feeling all the GE ("Frankenfood") idiot protesters will make it hard as hell. Probably be like Nuclear Power where even if it would dramatically help the environment, improve the quality of life for millions, and create new jobs, the enviros will still be against it.
