Default Bulgaria debts on Cayenne Ambulances

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/30/b...ne-ambulances/

Quote:
There's few things that could make one turn away from the blue light at the end of the tunnel and return to the land of the living, but a ride in a Porsche Cayenne ambulance just might do the trick. Apparently Bulgaria agrees, as the cash-strapped country's health ministry is using a loan from the World Bank to buy a fleet 32 Cayenne's destined for ambulance duty (a Russian Porsche Cayenne police vehicle is shown above).

Unlike normal ambulances, the Cayennes will be used to reach remote rural areas where normal emergency response vehicles wouldn't dare travel. Is the buy legit or is the health ministry full of car nuts that want to do some high-performance off-roading on the weekends? Bulgarian Health Minister Radoslav Gaydarski says that Porsche offered the lowest bid to win the contract with his country. The natives, however, are peeved, as Bulgaria's healthy industry is in debt and faces a constant shortage of supplies and services. Considering the retail price of a Cayenne could pay for a few triple-bypass surgeries, Porsche must have cut one killer deal for the Bulgarian government on its über-utes.
And I thought the Ford Excusion and the Chevy Suburban were way too Luxury for the cops in the USA. Even CSI & CSI: Miami pimps H2's and Yukon Denali's!!

They buy them when they need them but the cost isn't all really all that far from a new Crown Vic.

A new Suburban is at least $10K more than a Crown Vic is ($37K vs around $25K) for base versions of both vehicles. It's one thing if they need ambulances, in which case you can get a van, but a Crown Vic should suffice if you need a police car. Actually, what is the purpose of having huge SUV's as police vehicles?

You can carry more stuff. Usually the SUV police vehicles are for special purposes. An example would be the LAPD SUVs, they carry more weapons and non lethal equipment than the basic police car for special circumstances. If you go up into the mountains you see quite a few SUVs because of the off road conditions and snow. As for the price, I am guessing there is some kind of incentive that the manufacturers offer the police agencies.

they shouldn't be buying cayennes is what i'm saying, or any other luxury vehicle. there are several other suv's that are more than capable for light-medium offroad use. i don't know what deal porsche gave them, but i bet it was still several thousands more per unit than... a jeep grand cherokee. you also have to consider the maintenance cost of upkeeping a cayenne, especially one that's being used as an ambulance (mileage, wear & tear).

When you see something like this you either ask yourself - is it 1st. of April? or I wonder who got the 'back hander' (pay off). IMHO one of these applies in this case.

Ahh there is no need for that. They will be used in a rural and remote area, so nobody will ever see them. These are just SUV's for the government elite.images/smilies/tongue.gif I love it when corruption is done so subtle.8)
