Yes, but the GTI isn't the same price as a "normal" Golf/Rabbit.

Right now, the Civic SI's (especially the sadans) are going for MORE than sticker price. I'm sorry, but no matter how much I'd want a car, I'm not wiling to pay more for it "just because."

VW lately has actually been on the "below industry average" when it comes to Initial Quality. They have more problems per 100 cars than the average. In fact, they score worse than Hummer, and only above Isuzu and Land Rover.

Reeeally makes me want to 2nd guess a VW purchase...

Going from the top, the Hyundai Tiburon is fun, a used Acura RSX would be cool, and I'd love to try driving a Volvo C30, but I haven't seen any around yet...

They haven't even launched the C30 in the US yet. It will be close to a year I think before that happens.

Bah Land Rover's are perfectly reliable those studies are crap.

images/smilies/unsure.gif

Ehh nah I can't say that with a straight face. Land Rovers do have problems from time to time but they are better then those studies say. The people that drive them are just much more picky then average.

True...I remember Buick being the most reliable in one survey...although the factory they are built in is consistantly the best-rated plant in North America...too bad they make dull cars...

Avoid the mid to late 90's VW's. Especially the 1.8T's and V6's. Horrible reliability. Parents had a '99 Passat, was in the shop every other week. Friends have had V6's and 1.8's, all of them have had major mechanical and electrical difficulties, and the cars are all from 97-02.
The old Golfs from the 80's are pretty rockin, tons of fun, especially the early GTi's. If you're looking for something newer, and want performance, get a Mustang. Easy to find a newer GT in great shape for your budget, and they're not as horrible on gas as you think...besides, gas is still cheap, enjoy a V8 while you still can.

We had a 98 Seat Alhambra (exactly the same as a VW Sharan). We had it for about 6 years and in all that time we had two problems over normal wear and tear totalling less than £500 all together. My gran had a 98 Seat Ibiza (VW Polo), no problems what so ever in the 5 years she had that. Know plenty of people who have had VW cars from that era without any major problems at all.

I'm pretty sure the problems were related to the 1.8 and the V6, especially here in North America, with the Passats, Jetta's and Golf's.

Lots of interesting suggestions. As for the reasons I don't like Scions, I guess the best reason that I can give is that it doesn't "feel" like I'm in their demographic. Also I can't stand the tacky "bling-bling" look on cars, and Scion seems to be promoting that.

Here's my short list for right now of what I'm considering...

VW Rabbit
Mazda 3 5-Door Sport
Honda Civic Coupe

The reason I'm wanting to go *new* is for issues of financing. I don't know how it works outside the US (or if it even changes among the states), but what I do know is that new cars finance cheaper than used cars, and the older the used car the higher the interest in the financing. I was quoted at Carmax once on a 13% interest rate to finance the Xterra I bought (I managed to get a 7% loan from my credit union instead). I can get financing on a new car much cheaper, even through a dealer. Also the car is under warranty for several years, and it has a clean title, etc. I want that sort worry free driving for the years I'll be sweating it out in grad school.

Other considerations of mine are practicality, style, and decent performance. All of that for $19,000 at the absolute max. That's the formula I working off of. The three cars I mentioned above fit the bill (for me at least).

Actually most banks now don't care if the car is new or used they just care what model year it is. So for example a new 2007 MY vehicle keeping all other things equal would have the same rate is a used 2005 MY vehicle.

Don't get me wrong, I hate their "market targetting" and I could never consider an xA or an xB...but I do appreciate what the tC has to offer. First thing I'd do, though, is rip out that silly silver door that's supposed to "hide" your stereo...yeah...sure...

Just FYI for our friends not in the US, the Rabbit is the Golf. I believe someone mentioned earlier that there was a branding issue that required VW to change the model name. As far as I've researched the Rabbit is the Golf in every way except the Golf badge is crossed out with Rabbit written in.

None the less, there is no "Rabbit" GT available here, though there is the GTI.
