Audi's and BMW's are great, but Subaru's takes the cake!

Cheap compared to BMW and Audi, but they are by no means a cheap car. I think in many ways they fill the gap left by Volvo when they went more luxury. My first car was a 1976 Volvo and it was a solid, well built reliable, and safe car, but did not have any extra trappings of luxury (but it did have AC, thank Eris).
Subaru fills that niche now, with very good crash test data, all wheel drive, good marks for reliability and a comfortable and stylish interrior that does not get bogged down in airconditioned hand stiched leather seats. I think of Subarus as a mid-priced car, at least in the US you can do alot worse and spend less money. Before the Outback estate was redesigned to be a bit bigger, I had a real hard time fitting into Suabrus, not because of girth so hold the fat American jokes. I'm a tall guy at 6'4" and I have big feet at size 14 (US), at the time the Outback was not designed to handle someone of my dimentions. At an auto show I went to sit in the Subaru and was unable to do so in any kind of comfort, as I got out of the car I remarked to my friend, "It's just not going to happen, that thing is too damned small." At this point a little sales girl comes rushing over (and by little I mean 5-foot-nothing) and informs me that the car will, in fact, seat me. She then fiddles with all the controlls I had already fiddled with and stands back triumphantly. "Go ahead, try it now!" No joy, the car was just too small. As I pry myself out of the car I remark, "Sorry, I'll stick with my Dad's Land Cruiser." "Oh, this can do everything a Land Cruiser can do!" I just sat there dumbfounded. "Uhh, lady, I don't think this can go where we go." "Oh, sure it can!" - with a big smile. "Yeah, I've never seen one of these on Elephant Hill. The first obstacle is so steep that this would run into it, not over it. Everything from the front wheel forward would have to be removed, then a you tip up you will scrape off everything behind the rear wheel, and as you crest the boulder you will remove everything between the wheels. And this clearly can't do everything a Land Cruiser can - because I can sit in a Land Cruiser." Anyway, that's my funny Subaru story. Next time I'll tell you about the 1980's Legacy vs my posessed '76 Volvo. The new Outbacks are much better for legroom, and are quite comfortable for me as a passenger (I have not driven one). It sure felt solid driving up to Tahoe.

Subaru won a single sub-category of the engine of the year award, BMW won 90% of the others... i wouldn't brag about that so much.

That Subaru ad does not make much sense. Sure, Subaru won the best engine prize in 2-2,5litre engines, but BMW won the overal prize!

I own a subbie and these ads are the roar at the forums..
You have to think though, BMW and Audi have so much more marketing and sell alot more then tiny little Subaru. And its fun to poke jokes, makes you wonder how they will respond. Mitsu could give Subaru with a run with ads. By the way, that 2.5 Engine isn't really "new" so it couldn't have really won that award... |
