Kinda carbage, kinda not (depending on purpose, but I suspect it's not carbage). So, it gets it's own thread.

the point is, that the average pickup driver in America is even heavier then the stuff he transports, so the front needed more tires. Easy.

At first glance this may seem like another "penis-extender" or "money-waster" or "general-automotive-wankery."

But one of the comments on the Jalopnik page mentions that there is another similar truck with three tires in the back and two up-front. And it was used by...guess what? A gardening company, such as this one. (as you can see the flowery stuff on the bed)

The claimed purpose of this is so that these trucks can drive onto affluent lawns without too much damage. The weight of the truck is spread over a larger surface area so as not to induce harsh grass-trenches. How well it works, I have no clue.

They sure hacked the heck out of the fender to get clearance to turn. If they are that worried about tearing up lawns they should get a cart with ballon tires and push the flowers to where they are going...

A lot of landscaping can't be done with just a cart with ballon tires. Also, when you're on a time constraint, last thing you would want to be doing is loading the flowers from the truck to the cart, and then the cart to the ground. More work than is nessicary.

It makes perfect sense for the same reasons already mentioned. Many hotels or country clubs have massive grounds to maintain and a basic cart isn't enough to do the job. They should put fender extenders on, but other than that it seems perfectly fine to me.

OK, I'll give you that, but the same could be also accomplished with a 1,000 pound golf cart or small utility vehicle instead of a 7,000 pound truck...

Time is money. Read:

Quote:
UPS, FedEx and other commercial delivery companies pay a steep price for doing business in New York City, getting an average of 7,000 parking tickets every day and paying more than $102 million in fines in the city’s latest budget year.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14602712/

They figured its MORE expensive to have their driver look around for a legal spot to park (and thus delaying shipment to customers).

Most likely the same is true for these companies. When the customers are paying big bucks to get a job done quickly (companies, wealthy individuals) they cannot waste time transferring the tons of flowery from one truck to another. If you are doing a large project, you probably can't afford to transport the smaller utility truck/cart and possibly more man-power to operate all those vehicles.

Not true. There are some jobs that are just too big but require crossing soft ground to get to the job site. When we had our back yard redone they actually had to build a compacted road around the back of our house to keep the trucks from sinking in. We probably had 50-100 tons of fill brought in to restore the natural grade of the landscape - do you think a small utility cart could do the job? We were bringing in large 10-wheel dump trucks and a caterpillar excavator. If we needed that to do a back yard imagine what the regular maintenance for theses large properties must be like.

The world's oil supply is running out and instead of putting the extra money toward alternative fuels they develop a special truck so rich people's yards won't get messed up by the landscapers. Seems kinda pathetic if you ask me. images/smilies/dunno.gif

How much money do you think it cost them to use dually wheels on the front and saw the fender flares off?
