Default Electric car switch 'not an option'

Environmental group claims a complete switch to electric would topple national grid

Quote:
The national grid would collapse if everyone switched to electric cars, an environmental group has revealed. The Environmental Transport Association has criticised Prime Minister Gordon Brown for suggesting all British motorists will be driving electric or hybrid cars by 2020 and says higher taxes are not the way to stop people using petrol.

Electric and hybrid cars are currently an expensive and impractical alternative to petrol and diesel models, the group said. A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association added: ‘Many government ministers already have the use of a Toyota Prius hybrid car, but at almost £18,000 this type of car is out of reach for most people – high motoring taxes cannot cajole every British driver into an electric car if the market is not ready.’

The ETA believes that if everyone switched to electric cars the national grid would be unable to cope and said the question of where this additional capacity would come from was not addressed by Mr Brown. The ETA is a not-for-profit organisation that lobbies for sustainable travel and alternative motoring.

They want an agrarian medieval-type society (at the most advanced) where everything is organic and natural and everyone worships Mother Gaia. Seriously.

Basically, they want us back in the Dark Ages where Malthusian principles would come into play to reduce the number of people on Earth. Read some of their lit - some of the more radical enviros are now advocating mass murder (yes, as in killing humans) in the name of their god, Gaia.

Or, to quote Pournelle: "Environmentalists will not be happy until we’re all huddled together for warmth, slowly freezing to death in the dark."

Maybe the radical enviromentals and the scientoligists could have an all out religious war and kill each other off. I can't think of a specific reason off the top of my head why they should fight but who cares?

Sadly, cars tend to require more power than your average solar-powered gadget. That, and the UK's so overcast that they could never get enough energy to power a light bulb, much less cars. Basically, not enough light, not enough coverage, solar panels too expensive, the usual reasons.

It reminded me of this: The Anarcho-syndicalist Peasants Sketch

We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week,...
ARTHUR:
Yes.
DENNIS:

ARTHUR:
Yes, I see.
DENNIS:

images/smilies/wacko.gif Self-proclaimed environmentalists with foresight and ... reasoning skills above that of a third-grader? My God, they actually have a little common sense! Gentleman, we may very well be witnessing an evolution of the hippie as we know it! Or not. Either way, it's nice to see that some of our friends in the far left may have to face some hard facts.

GB and the whole of his party and parliament are utter cocks.... i hate the way this country is run. its all stick and no carrot.

he wants us to not drive cars and use fuel, and his way of doing that is to up tax on fuel, up tax on cars, even do a retrospective tax that penalises people who bought cars as far back as 2001 when they couldnt possibly have any knowledge on whats happening today.

thing is none of this money seems to get spent offering alternatives.... wheres the alternative fuel stations? i see no hydrogen stations, i see very very few LPG stations. tax on diesel is so high that at this rate the fuel that emits the least CO2 (the stuff these twats bang on about at all hours) will be shunned because it wont make any financial sense for most people.

wheres the cash incentives to go green? wheres the usable public transport? yeah its ok in london with those oyster cards but else where in the country its not so rosy. train tickets cost a packet as well.

basically he's punishing us for driving cars, yet for the most part we have no option but to drive cars because all other alternatives are either lacking or simply do not exist. its not gonna stop people using cars or reduce CO2, its just gonna make him loads of money that he can then waste on shite and the pensions for the masses of jobsworth civil servants labour employ.

he wants to spend an arm an a leg on wind turbines, which IMO are a false economy. sticking with the CO2 arguement... i was once told by a respectable lecturer at my uni that for a wind turbine to even break even ,CO2 wise, on all the CO2 produced during is production (particularly that of the concrete bases) it would need to run full pelt for 7 years. 7 years!

why cant he spend it on nuclear power as well.... its clean in the CO2 sense, its just a case of dealing with the waste. we do have good engineers in this country, i know we can find away to dispose of it safely.

what a fucking dick head that man gordon brown is. i secretly pray each night for his horrible death by fire. or sniper.

oh btw, the greenies dont really car about the environment, they just use it as a tool to try control everyones lives and make them miserable. i remember watchin a documentary on green peace an the original head honcho had left because he didnt like what it had become...it wasnt about saving the earth anymore. theyre part of the reason 3rd worlders are still there....this lot wont let them build cheap coal fired power stations, they want them to buy expensive and woefully inadequate solar panels and wind farms. idiots.

ah
With the tan I've gotten this summer from only having the top down on my car ( for 40 minute trips tops) I could probably do it if I covered the whole garage roof with them lol.
There's always wind turbines for the UK

enviormentalists are stupid, maybe just some, they should really research before opening their pie-hole, they should just try and find REAL ALTERNATIVES, not things that a mad scientist said from 300 m under the himalaya, and understand the carbon footprint batteries actually give you, it isn't petrol that's the killer, coal factories, chemical factories that destroy the inviorment, using hormones that make diary cows give more milk => farting more, and so on, this is SO STUPID,

MOST ENVIORMENTALISTS ARE DOWN RIGHT STUPID, i have to agree with clarkson (i think) that said that they're people that their life haven't turend out how they wanted and are just trying to annoy all others

Not a student of world history, are you? images/smilies/biggrin.gif

The colonists dressed up as Native Americans to take advantage of the lax Brit regulations concerning Natives so they could get aboard without a shot being fired (sound familiar, with British "minority protection laws" today?). No *real* Native American/Indians took part in the raid. They also did this to disguise themselves to protect against the inevitable British military backlash.

They were colonists dressed as natives. If you'd paid attention in American history class, or listened carefully to Mary Poppins, you'd know that images/smilies/tongue.gif.

Funny that they mentioned the Prius in the article, a car that doesn't plug into the grid!

Quote:
Association has criticised Prime Minister Gordon Brown for suggesting all British motorists will be driving electric or hybrid cars by 2020...
They're right about taxes though, its a worldwide phenomenon - Governments have one solution to all "problems", tax!
