Default How should i I4 sound?

Just in your opinion what should a I4 sound like? for me i don't like the rice cans, my favorite i4 ever was a Alfa Spider (race-prepared) that was soo growly it was hard to believe it was a i4!

do you think a i4 should be high-pitched? deep and bomby? or in the middle just where it can be

im personally kind of tired of deep ricey sounding i4s, but at the same rate i don't know if a high-pitched wale is any better, anyways ive been working on exhaust tuning and ive learned alot, but i made a little video and was wondering what you guys think i should try to do with this sound

my current plans include moving the muffer back further so i can get more high-end resonance from a 25-30 inch tail-pipe, right now it smooths out too much at high rpm for me, but i might just be being goofy

anyways, i know this is bad as a video, ive got 3 strait 1/5 ratings images/smilies/dry.gif , but hows the car sound?, and how would you alter the sound?

disclaimer: i was dumb when i made this and theres virtually no video, sorry about that
http://youtube.com/watch?v=s4z8nSfSO3w (ignore the open header part, im mainly wondering about the beginning part etc, also a little bit at the very end)

I love the sound my integra makes with the stock exhaust, so many people replace the exhaust with a fart cannon (or whatever the call them) and they just sound totally gay.

I liked the sound of the car with the cat back off on the vid. I think I4s should be high pitched and raspy.

This IMO is awesome

I have to say the sound of the Sky is pretty nice, although the car doesn't have a lot of guts, at low RPM's it as a low toned growl. It just sounds cool IMO.

The sound of the Offy I think is the perfect 4 banger...

http://www.milleroffy.com/offy.rm

And yes, that is a 4 cylinder, all 270 cubic inches of it images/smilies/twisted.gif images/smilies/thumbsup.gif images/smilies/burnrubber.gif

Mercedes also nailed the 4 cylinder sound in their DTM 2.3/2.5 190e's, same with bmw in their S14 m3 engines.

I've always loved the sound of a Twin cam Honda coming at me, I just the sound as they went by. A small displacement 4 banger should growl and scream, but never buzz like fart cannon Honda's do.

That s2000 is to buzzy...

Ottobon: the sound at the beginning was pretty damn good really. The open header sounded good as well, until you get to the part you don't like, plus that is to loud.

I'm not sure I have a preference on what an I4 should sound like. That said, however, I do like the somewhat unique sound from 16 valve 240SX engine images/smilies/smile.gif

It's the same as comparing V8s: Detroit muscle makes a fantastic, growly pig-iron sound, but Ferrari's V8s have a spine-shattering, race-bred symphony -- and I like them both.

That was f*cking amazing.

I love the howl of VTEC engines. The Hondas I've heard allways sound like automotive nirvana. For four cylinders, at least. Love it.

The sound of the thing in ours ain't too bad to be honest, it's actually nice and burling over 4000. Not exactly biblical, but not bad.

Nice noise!

off-topic: the bug is amazingly fast, and the 2002 seems to be on tripod mode, amazing video.

I have never really got enhousiastic over 4-cylinder engines unless they have a turbo. That might sound a bit wrong, as I usually prefer NA engines, but they don't have such a smoth singing sound like a 6-cylinder has, or the thundering bark of a V8.

My sound-favourite out of the four-pots is the Ford Cosworth engine, like the one fitted to this ex-BTCC Sierra RS500 Cosworth. The sound is much better though in real life.

thanks for the responces so far!

Bone-used to agree about engine noise than i heard the M3 too much and got bored/sick of plain engine noise myself

Fbc-with that said does yours sound something more like this? http://media.putfile.com/mr2driveby , my car came with a fart can that i tore off as fast as possible, so ive never really heard stock-ish mr2 sound

HHunter-were all seemingly agree that ricecans don't make a nice sound, with that said if your integra wets your whistle than make a video man! images/smilies/smile.gif

Arosamike-Thank you! i liked it up till 5000 RPMs on the road, than it just fell apart, i think the thin mild steel piping it to blame as far as why it doesn't work in real time on the road, As i may have said my favorite i4, a car that absolutely blew me away driving it around ypsilanti mi, was this little yellow Alfa Spider with a 2000 similar to the GTV, ive never heard a more charismatic engine, and to this day it gives me shivers

NAIDANAC-ill keep my ears out for that one, haven't heard that car yet

thedguy-Lumpy sounding i4s? as far as my type of car is concerned how do you like this one? http://youtube.com/watch?v=_fwJMZwn0DY, i also think as far as small, but mean sounding engines go you might enjoy this bike http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...zi+pipes&hl=en i know i do

Vitamin J-as far as ITBs on japanese i4s go i rather like this one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oS_WqaALGw could use a little more rasp, but i think its entertaining and distinctive, a year or so ago i used to immitate this cars engine whenever id run around work(meaning i really liked it images/smilies/smile.gif ) now i imitate astons usually though haha (im a bit of a car nerd)

Nomix-I agree mostly about the Hondas, just im still rather not impressed by the K20 sound, its not bad but its usually generic, i suppose ive heard good ones though, like that yellow and blue Spoon RSX

marcos-never heard that before, thanks for bringing it up

this is all making me wish i had a welder and some extra cash so i could go play with pipe lengths, muffler location, mini resonators and everything pipe diameter, megaphones, airhorn tips, everything! its nice to know i'm atleast somewhat on the right track, i just feel i need my car to be a little bit more memorable, but without being annoying of course images/smilies/smile.gif

some cool things that ive found recentlyimages/smilies/ohmy.gifne thing ive realised, thanks to Old alfas, as well as subaru boxer 4s, and some race engise, is that having longer runners in the 2 pipe section(inbetween 4-2 and 2-1 transitions of course) can aid in making everything sound more rowdy and awesome, as well it seems really consistant that longer tailpipes (section after final muffler) have to do with how much low and high rpms resonance the car has. my car smooths out at higher rpms because it only has 20 inches of pipes, about 30 inches it usually sounds yummy and gargly all the way, and 60 inches it just gets raspy past anything above idle, anyways ive found its fun to play with these things, most people try to make their cars more powerful, what i really desire is a good sound though (although power would be nice some day)
