Default I rode in my dream car, around a race track, and it was on race slicks

I flew down to Albuquerque to work on my new racecar last Thursday. Sunday there was a Legend car race at the local track and Spec Miatas were invited for an impomptu race sanctioned by the track. Also, they put on a track day for regular old street cars, race cars, tuned cars, etc.

Well we're sitting around after we unloaded all the cars and I look over at the gate and see a bright yellow Vette on a trailer. I stand up and say out loud "is that a Z06?" then he turns and I see the scoops. It was a brand new 2006 Corvette Z06 with less than 5000 miles. Not only that but it is wearing absolutely massive Goodyear Eagle race slicks, I don't know the width but later he said they were over 23 inches tall on the rear. He was over signing in and paying the fee and I walked over to the trailer and get on my hands and knees to look under the car. Titanium, aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber, and all sorts of other goodies were waiting for me under there. It was so beautiful. The transaxle in particular caught my eye. I had never been able to look underneath a C6 Z06 before and that made my day.

Later on I asked him if he'd take me for a ride, when he said yes I didn't skip a beat and immediately said "I'll grab my helmet."

Here's the car (sorry shitty phone pics, at least they load quick):
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m131/vitaminjsa/Z06.jpg

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m131/vitaminjsa/Z06tire.jpg

Well to summarize, it was fucking awesome. I had never ridden or driven anything that handled better than a Spec Miata except for Formula cars. This thing made a Spec Miata look like it was on street tires. As soon as we pulled onto the track he started warming up the tires by tossing the Vette back and forth, I thought for sure we would spin, I couldn't toss my Miata back and forth that quickly. Pshh, it was just getting started.

He wasn't full on racing nor was he trying to set lap records, but damn did that thing move. Bear in mind this racetrack, Sandia Motorsport Park, is a very slow technical course. I'll hit maybe 90mph on the main straight in my Spec Miata (exit turn 14 at about 75mph). Even still the Vette ate the corners like it was nothin. The other cars out there included a tuned (over 300whp) SRT4, Spec Miata, 1967 Porsche 911 racecar, and a 996 Carrera. All of the above were a moving chicane. We would gain on the 996 in the corners and absolutely destroy it on the straights. Hmmm, spent your 70 grand wisely did you?

The brakes slowed it down better than anything. At one point another car pulled in front of us suddenly and I thought we were going into his bumper for sure. Nope, the brakes slowed the car down so goddamn fast the seatbelt left a bruise on my shoulder.

Oh yeah, I haven't even talked about the motor yet. Jesus Christ Mary Joseph Bill Cosby and Dan Akroyd did that sumbitch move. And the noise it made was breathtaking. The speedo moved so quickly at first I thought it was the tach. 90mph in my Miata was 110mph in the Vette (and he was braking about 75ft earlier than me).

Sure the interior is a piece of shit, but who the fuck cares?

I envy you so much! The Z06 is hands-down the best value in fast cars anywhere in the world. I've read they get really good mileage for what they are (around 25 mpg highway). A Corvette is on my life's list of must own cars. 8)

You are one lucky bastard. That's an awesome car, I wish it came to Australia and you didn't have to have it converted (because that costs you over $200k in the end).

Looks really nice in that yellow too!

Now that's a nice track-day toy - and you're a lucky bastard for getting a ride.

Lucky bastard VJ. I want a Corvette so bad I can taste it, sadly the latest model in my price range would be a C4 lol.

Do Australian vehicles have to have RHD? Or what do you mean by converted? Even though we have the strictest road laws in Germany it is no problem to register car with RHD.

And the Vette is great, everybody is jealous I think images/smilies/wink.gif

Haha! Damn right!

I wonder how a Viper would compare to a Z06 on a track, especially the new Viper. Mmmm....

Basically, any LHD car under 30 years old in most states has to be converted to RHD to be able to be registered for the road.

By the way, looks like you had a blast, the Z06 does look like quite a nice piece of kit images/smilies/smile.gif

Aw man, lucky bastard.

I wish I could get a ride in one of those, even more so on a proper race track. Looks like some right good fun.

Neat! Say, since you attend road races alot, have you seen a Corvette C5R / C6R in action? The sound they make shakes the ground, and I mean that literally! I think only an old Panoz LMP with Judd V10 could make a cooler sound.

No I haven't seen those beasts in person yet. The Cadillac CTS-V.Rs that run in Speed World Challenge GT make a noise unlike any car I've ever heard. They shake the ground. Same with the Porsche GT3 RS race cars.

Yeah, I saw the Caddys at Road America....holy. crap. The C6R's sound pretty much the same, except it looks like God himself slingshots the car out of the corner.

That car is absolute rubbish. Just as Clarkson why, he gave a good explanation already when he reviewed it.
