Default I'm thinking about buying a Volvo...

Someone here in my town is selling a white 1992 Volvo 740...for...are you ready? $350. Needs a water pump/thermostat, alternator, and maybe a starter. I don't think I can pass this up. If I sell some of my unwanted Camaro parts I'm getting it this weekend. I don't know what trim it is or whether its a turbo or manual transmission. But, the most important thing is its a bloody Volvo and its cheap. images/smilies/mrgreen.gif If it IS a turbo and manual I found my autocross car. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

So, the main point to this topic is I need some info regarding the 740. So whatcha got for me ladies and gents?

*edit*
P.S. And yes this would make THREE project cars. I'm a sucker for a good deal. I bought the Camaro for $100, the Daytona Shelby for $200, and now possibly a Volvo for $350. images/smilies/lol.gif Can I stop?

Hm. There is no such thing as a "cheap Volvo that needs a little work." They all become expensive in a hurry.

Besides, unless it's a turbo or a diesel, you should walk away from it. It's not fast and it's not fuel efficient. Well, unless you want to put an LS1 into it like that guy on Ricekiller.

If I can get the car daily drivable for less than $1,000 that's worth it to me. I don't care if its not fast or economical--I drive a Camaro V8 daily remember gas mileage means nothing to me. I can always drop another drivetrain in that car to MAKE it fast if I wanted to. I just want some personal experiences with this gen Volvo and what sorts of numbers this car has. Weight, power, etc.

I'm new to the Volvo - Swede world, so the only stuff I know is about my S60 R, but I'm slowly learning.

This one's a saloon. I can't see it not being a good deal if its only $350 and less than $600 to get it running well. Plus, as a bonus this is really just a temporary daily driver until my Camaro gets its drivetrain overhauled then the Volvo will be turned into my autocross car.

I have a 745 and i never had any problem with it. My grandfather bought it new in '89 and apart from the normal wear and tear those cars are bulletproof, all the electrics still works, and it's more comfy than most modern cars.. But i have the GLT that's the 2,3L 16V "fast" version.. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I see them way more on volvos.

But I don't see why they wouldn't suit a saab.

Still see quite a few 740s and 760s here, better car was the 850 IMHO - work collegue has 150,000 mile model still on its original clutch! I would agree with Spectre though, bugger when they do go wrong - expensive parts here at least.

I'm actually surprised that nobody's picked up on the "ovloV" comment yet. Or asked where that comes from. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I had a '94 850 Turbo which was a completely different beast than the 700/900 series. It was fun, but expensive to fix when things went wrong (which sadly wasn't a rare occurrence). Being as the 700 series dates back to the Bronze Age I would assume it would be pretty cheap and simple to fix.

Bikers call them "ovloV's" because that's the last thing we see in our rearview mirror (an inverse Volvo logo) right before the oblivious smug ("I'm in a Volvo and can't be hurt, why should I pay attention to anything?") idiot in the Volvo plows into us from behind.

The starter is around $120, the water pump is $24 and the alternator is around $160. Otherwise its not too bad to fix. I'm seriously considering getting this. I don't know yet.
