no, wrong. they aren't the same car. the Murano comes in FWD and AWD flavors while the FX comes in both RWD and AWD. the FX is a much bigger car than the Murano and is based off an SUV platform rather than the car platform the Murano is based off. now the EX you're talking about is infact the Infiniti equivalent of the Murano.

The FX model is based off the same platform as the 350Z whereas the the Murano is based off the Maxima/Altima platform. This is why the FX has RWD/AWD and the Murano has FWD/AWD versions. Though the FX35 is slightly longer than the Murano (only by so much), the Murano has more interior space due to it's platform; the FX has it's engine farther back toward the center the car and the engine is mounted logitudinally. They both have the same engine, however the Murano has the de-tuned V6. |

The Middle east is an interesting market, it seems to follow the Toyota Australia in a lot of cases even with its small lineup. The only exceptions are mainly engines where the Middle east prefers 4-cylinders for cars particularly the very old but very durable 22R which only stayed in production for a long time because the Middle east liked that engine very much. Other than those pieces of info I'm not sure why they like the Camry. The only reason I know about their engine preferences is all the middle eastern guys with a stock Toyota Cressida regardless of age came with a 22R, everywhere else its definitely a more powerful 6-cylinder.

As for the engines it seems as if very few in the Middle east bought a Toyota car with anything other than a 22R. Again its the only place I know where the 22R was still used when it would probably be cheaper to discontinue it. The 22R still maintains a excellent reputation of durability and reliability despite its very low power, judging what you said about how Middle east buyers liking this reliability is possibly a factor why it was still readily available in the mid 90s.
