US police radar is quite often able to display speeds of up to 300mph or more.

"During its review of the CCX, BBC television program Top Gear reported that the Koenigsegg CCR holds the fastest speeding ticket in the United States, which was supposedly for 242 mph (389 km/h) in a 75 mph (121 km/h) zone. This allegedly occurred in May 2003 in Texas on the San Francisco to Miami Gumball 3000 Rally."

http://www.myluxury.info/koenigsegg-...eeding-ticket/

But since it's Top Gear, and we all know that they're not the most factually accurate people ever, there's no telling if that's real. The closest thing I know of is that one Hayabusa rider's been clocked on the Dallas North Tollway by the tollbooths/cameras at ~210mph, per a segment on the local news some time back, IIRC. The section he was clocked in is like the Trench Run from Star Wars - enclosed by tall walls, often sub-surface.

Well, I just asked because it is known that from a certain speed on, those stationary radar devices are not functioning anymore, because the time gap between the measurement and the triggering of the camera is too long from a certain speed on. I guess it was in the 1st season of Top Gear, when Richard Hammond demonstrated it.

And I doubt that it was measured by a hand-held "laser pistol" or the police driving behind in a video car images/smilies/wink.gif

Or did they do it like in that, where a Porsche driver has been stopped for speeding and told the police he was quite sure there was no speed camera and wanted to know how they measured it? As an answer, one of the two police officers turns to his colleague and says:
"Hank, how fast are you allowed to drive here?"
"brrrrrrm"
"And how fast was he?"
"BRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMM"

So it's actually a French car (seeing as the most important bit is French)?

Maybe they know the car will overpower and destroy the tires, so they thought it poetic? images/smilies/tongue.gif

US speed cameras are actually different. There is a show here called Mythbusters and they were testing the same thing. I don't remember what speeds they achieved but they did mention Top Gear and the guy who was setting up the speed camera for them said that he is aware of it but the statutes here are different in a couple of ways and cameras are calibrated for much higher speeds.

They did 245 and 260 mph, i saw that ep yesterday :p

But that was pointless, they needed to do it properly, go from 180 to 220 or so and see if the camera picks it up.

@TomCat, think I should address them one by one.

The way Americans talk about their country in front of others, leaves me with the impression that they think I should be impressed. I wanted to clarity that I'm not. You shouldn't be offended by someone saying he/she's not impressed ANYHOW.

Quote:
"How can you say you're a rational human being and be proud of things you weren't responsible for?"
I still stand by that one. Pride has its place, but the occasion is rare that you can afford to be proud without flipping into football fan mode. Try to keep it to things you consider yourself responsible for.

"I'll greatly enjoy your attempts at trying to weasel away from this inadequate comparison."
He said I sounded like an imaginary piece of technology, so I had to show him just how human I could be. Cruelty is very, very human.

"Realizing this is the difference between a rational human and a typing monkey."
I was referring to arguing by arguments, as opposed to arguing by "It's supposed to be this way". Humans are the only being that can supply you with an argument when arguing, I think we should take advantage of that more often.

Quote:
That does come off as pretentious, even if you weren't trying to be. I know it's just your opinion, but trying to change all the above quotes to say "I think" or "In my opinion" just doesn't work. You phrase things so anyone who dares disagree with you is an "irrational typing monkey".
You're only an irrational keyboard monkey if you reply like one. If you address all your opponent's points and reply to them with good arguments of your own, I'd be glad to listen to you. Actually, I'm glad you replied to me.

No, in the US, it is generally vehicle mount or hand-held radar or laser units that are used by police. We don't generally have, use, or want stationary speed cameras. Partly due to annoyance, partly due to Constitutional issues.

Speed cameras are banned outright in Texas, for example.

Police using American radar and lidar guns have been known to *correctly* clock aircraft moving at 400mph plus (idiotic urban myths about getting locked up by American military anti-radar missiles notwithstanding.)

Michelin operates tire plants in the US. Most US market Michelins are made in the USA.

Then most Koenigseggs are American, as their most important bit is from the USA - the heavily modified Ford Mustang V8 that powers most of them.

And, as discussed in another thread, the radar gun reading isn't legally the prima facie evidence against you in court. It's just there to confirm the officer's expert observation that you were speeding and to quantify by how much. Or at least, that's the legal fiction.

Nope, the most important bits are French again.

For those with no sense of sarcasm or wit, my original comment was taking the piss out of the whole "LOL, the engine is from X therefore that car is really an Xian car. Everyone knows the engine is the most important bit. LOLz" attitude and associated comments.

I always thought the most important bit was the cup holders images/smilies/smile.gif So how does the Veyron compare to the Ultimate Aero in the cupholder department? That is the REAL battle images/smilies/wink.gif

They're probably all outsourced to Chinese factories, hence both would be Chinese cars in that very important aspect.
