Every car is a luxury here images/smilies/smile.gif

First you pay 25% VAT like on all other goods, then you pay 105% of the first 8400€ (10200$) and then 180% of the rest of the cars price (this is of course also ontop of the first 25%..)...

A couple of examples:

Alfa Romeo GT 3,2 V6 24V - 613'379 DKK - 82'242€ - 100'318$ - 134'409 AUD
Audi S4 - 1'101'540 DKK - 147'695€ - 180'157$ - 241'380 AUD
BMW M3 - 1'176'380 DKK - 157'729€ - 192'398$ - 257'780 AUD
Lamborghini Murciélago V12 Roadster - 5'550'000 DKK - 744'147€ - 907'708$ - 1'216'171 AUD
Mercedes-Benz C 55 T AMG - 1'382'000 DKK - 185'299€ - 226'027$ - 302'837 AUD
Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren aut. - 9'681'000 DKK - 1'298'034€ - 1'583'337$ - 2'121'398 AUD
Porsche Cayenne Turbo Plus aut. (500 BHP) - 2'555'978 DKK - 342'707€ - 418'032$ - 560'091 AUD
VW Golf 1,4 (non FSI) - 224'074 DKK - 30'043€ - 36'647$ - 49'101 AUD

scary stuff...

Are there tarrifs or any other import taxes in the US for foreign cars?
Do you pay VAT on cars?
Yes US gallons....I dont think theres an import tax for foreign cars, theres no mention of any kind of tax except for a gas guzzler tax on the sticker of any import car here. And whats VAT? We do have to pay regular sales tax on buying a car (and the percentage varies from state to state) but its fairly low (still a lot of money though) when compared to the taxes others are having to pay. For example the New York City sales tax is 8.25%

Wow! I'm not feeling so bad about having to pay the amount I do after hearing some of these stories!

Denmark and Bangladesh are insane!

VAT = Value added tax. That' s your sales tax then images/smilies/wink.gif 8.25% is not much, in some countries in europe you pay more than 20% i.e. Denmark (25%).

Based on the magazine I "borrowed" from Singapore Airlines, in Singapore it costs:
BMW M3 - 338,000 SGD - 266,000 AUD

I think we have a winner! Well in Singapore, you would never know that the taxing on cars are so high cos they have good taste there. At my hotel, I would get up every morning and scan the parking lot for nice rides images/smilies/drool.gif Lots of em aswell images/smilies/mrgreen.gif

I'd be interested to find out what taxing is like on cars in Vietnam..I hear its crazy images/smilies/wacko.gif

Well judging from these stories from around the world I retract my complaints about the Australian system. images/smilies/tongue.gif images/smilies/lol.gif

Australian car price is darn cheap i'd say.

in indonesia u have to pay twice the price in australia.
and that's for "normal" car.....and then u add some more tax for "sport" car.....and some more for "luxury" car......and on top of it, some more tax on "completely built up car" i.e. importing whole car

so, imagine the price of IMPORT LUXURY SPORT CAR

Of course, high car taxes makes people do silly things... You pay a lower tax for commercial vehicles, so most Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes ML and so on get's the rear seats ripped out and get yellow licensplates instead of the normal white.

But some people take it a bit too far images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Porsche 928 5,0 S4 Pick-up
Mercedes 250 2,5TD Pickup 2d
Chevrolet Camaro Z28 5,7 aut (rear seats removed and a vertical plate is mounted behind the drivers seat)

what happens in denmark if you buy the car abroad?

do you have to pay those insane taxes?

can you keep foreign license plates and insure it in Denmark w/o paying taxes?

it just seems insane.

I mean, i'm all for luxury taxes in expensive cars, say anything over £30k, but that's just ridiculous

I do think that there should be some kind of fixed taxation rate same for all type of cars... How do u justify charging more for a car in a particular fuel consumption category ? We are anyway paying tax for every gallon of fuel we buy ...(unless u are in the middle east)...so whats the point in charging us again ??
and as TGG said... u are not going to be offered a special lane nor customised speed limits.... images/smilies/thumbdown.gif

Yeah, if you live in denmark and want to drive it here. The tax on a used car is calculated based on the price of a similar car that's sold in denmark.

Nope, if you live here it's illigal to drive a car with foreign license plates. You can't even rent a car in germany and drive it in denmark if you live in denmark.

You get used to it, you just have to learn to avoid looking at car prices elsewhere images/smilies/smile.gif
