    Default M5, S6, E63 or something else?

I'm trying to get my dad to upgrade when the lease runs out on my mom's FX45. I'm pushing for an M5, but I wouldn't be disappointed with any of these listed cars. This is NOT for a supercar, just something kinda practical (and hopefully something I can take out and spank ricers with). It's gotta have at least 4 doors and 5 seats. She does drive my little brothers to school. Also it can't be a Cayenne, those things are fugly. And finally, it should be discreet. My mom works as a professor and her co-workers will get bitter if she pulls up in something REALLY flashy. The cars listed above aren't necessarily guidelines, but you get the idea.

    the m5 is a supercar.

the most discreet would probably be the s6...m5 is quite aggressively styled with the diffusor and the front bumper...

S6 for me - classy, discrete, and grunt aplenty. M5 is a very close second, with the E63 far behind after sending me to sleep with it's styling.

Though as HOKUM said - a new RS6 would be special and worth waiting for

does ur parents enjoy speed?? i know every kid in the world wants their parents to buy an M5 so they can brag to their friends in school, but lets look on the practical side... M5 is too thirsty, and if u ignore the performance factor, its too expensive for a 5 series.. its an ultimate driver's car, if ur parents just want something to travel around (going to work and drop ur brother off at school) comfortably in a big 4 door, 5 seater saloon, then i would recommend either the new S Class or the 7 Series, or Audi A8. Reason being that they are discreet and they offer great comfort.

    DON'T MAKE ME PICK!

Definately the E63! More power, more torque, more luxury, brand new AMG components and styling just the way I like it - understated.

The E63 is just the perfect balance between having a comfortabe and luxurious ride for the 95% of the year your stuck in the city and having a capable performance beast for the other 5% of time you spend on the country roads or at a track.

Wait for the RS6 But if you don't want to wait then go for the S6. Looks so much classier than the other two.

I have been in a M5 alot of times and it is only good if you are sitting in the front as yu get the folding seats but in the back it is just another car. i have also been in an E55 and an E350 many times and they are cars (mainly the E55) were you as a passanger you think you are doing 60kph but you look at the speeddo and you are revving at 3,000 and doing 100kph. that is why i go for the E63,

For the driver the M5 is more of a inside car as you sit down in the car and look thinking why don't i have my 500hp? you have to program all the buttens including the "M"button yourself, the E class has one button the dose all that "ESC"

I vote for the E63. it is just a better looking car aswell 8)

Mercedes doesnt disengage the ESP fully, and besides u only need to program the M5 once. Its like a cellphone, spend some time to set it up nicely, and u will enjoy it, the more options the better....

And this is seriously getting ridiculous, just because clarkson doesnt like the M5 cos its too complicated for him, it doesnt mean that the M5 is a bad car. ppl are acting like a bunch of kids just following what other ppl say.

if u look at the M5 with a diff angle then things will become clearer, its like ppl dont ever complain about their S-Class or 7 Series having too much options, or too much computer in it, or too complicated to use. just because the M5 has 507bhp, it doesnt mean that its a supercar, the BMW M5 is still a saloon, and it is suppose to be a comfy 5 series saloon, so i dont see what the fuss is all about, the V10 M5 engine and the performance is just a by product that makes u choose the M5 and not the 530i. Just because the M5 is whipping all the saloons out there on the market doesnt mean that the M5 is a supercar, its still a saloon, and its comfortable and have lots of gadgets to play with.

right, even with more power and torque.. the E55 and E63 will still accelerate to 200kph the same time : p

and also, E55 or E63 are not suppose to be on a track, they are suppose to be driven on a straight line at a very high speed (e.g autobahn) when travelling somewhere far..

to the recent few posts: you'd never in your right mind take an E63 to the track.

    To the topic at hand:
M5 is too hard and fast for your mum's daily. And it's too ostentatious.

E63 is a quiet understated car with a mighty wallop, but it does look like an old person's car. Don't forget it's a benz, and we know how well they've been ranking in the JDPower Customer satisfaction survey. Expect to be dissapointed. I'd never ever have one. They're too bland.

S6. My pick. top looks, excellent go, practical. And it's an Audi so it'll easily be the best quality. The ride may be a bit iffy though.

Have you considered the Lexus ES or Infiniti M V8s?

I find the current crop of BMW cars too computery, instead of a regular engine it's got a Pentium 4 processor and 3 gigs of RAM!

All a bit nerdy for me, prefer a car that I just drive rather than fiddle with. You just know that the electronics will screw up and it'll be a fortune to sort when the dealer's mechanics don't know how to fix it!

Compared to the other cars the M5 is the most hardcore of them. The most comfy setting in the M5 is about the same, or harder, as the hardest in the merc. (atleast in the E55 AMG stated by Auto, motor & sport).
I would choose the M5 any day because it's so focused and raw, but for filling the job as your moms daily commuter, I don't really think the M5 is the car. Since she currently drives a SUV, performance and handling dosen't appear to be high on her list. I would guess the Merc. is the best option. Pretty comfy, not that flash, and still as fast as the M5, in a straight line atleast.

Somehow i get the impression that you don't have much influence on the decision and this thread serves only to advertise the fact that your daddy might buy a fast car you can drive sometimes then.

And thats a bad thing? But more importantly, it gets to 100km/h in 4.5 compared to E55's 4.7 and M5's 4.7. Also note that the M5 wasn't even as fast as the old supercharged AMG V8 to 100km/h and was harder to get off the line than the AMG. And no, I'm not one of those idiots brings up the topic of setting up the M5 and its computer stuff. You get used to that I know. I'm actually reffering to the respectable Best Motoring program where the heavier CLS beat the M5 in drags a few times in a row. Its probably the torque advantage...

And why would that be? Are you just saying that or are you being serious. I think its a joke to be making such claims against such a car from such a marque without stating reasons why and backing up your comment.

Yes the E63 isn't a dedicated track car but its more than competant, thats for sure.

But don't get me wrong boys, M5 is the schizzz and I want one badly I just so happen to like my MB's more

Your mom wants an M5? Respect.

May I recommend an M5, but the E39 last-gen one? It's even more understated and elegant than the current M5 (in my eyes, anyway), it's also shit-your-pants quick, and they're not too expensive either, especially under BMW's Certified Pre-Owned program.

Failing that, I'd vote for the S6.
