Default My friend had a fire

A friend of mine was driving back from Cincinnati and he said his Buick Riviera started making this horrible noise and then a fire started. When I first talked to him I thought he meant a small flame under the hood. Then he showed me the photos he took.

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/586/firebz3.jpg

And the aftermath.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6577/fire2lg2.jpg

http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/6654/fire3bg6.jpg

http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/8138/fire4wc3.jpg

From the way he described it the car was pretty much engulfed in flames by the time he pulled onto the hard shoulder. In the first picture you can see the skid marks from when he braked hard to get out of the thing. Fortunately him and another friend of mine were able to bail out before the interior went up. They were alright except for a few singed hairs on their arms and the fact that they were left out in the open when it was about 15 degrees. It could have ended much worse.

Let us bow our heads for a moment of silence for this fallen Buick.

I am glad your friend is ok. What the hell happened? Gas line rupture?

He said neither he nor anyone else is sure what caused it. But come to think of it I remember him saying it always smelled like gasoline inside the car. images/smilies/lol.gif

Wow, sounds like a lucky escape (for your friend, less so for the car).

Though I guess if you're gonna go, go out in a blaze of glory.

It was inevitable. Sometime during the life of a Buick/Pontiac, it will come in contact with or develop a fire.

I hate seeing car fires of any kind on any vehicle--cool or not. I'm glad your friend is ok. Car fires are nothing to sneeze at, you literally have precious seconds to escape.

Maybe someone will decide to rebuild that Buick sometime in the future rather than crush it.

Wow, it's good to hear that your friends were OK. They could have easily crashed into the barrage on the right side of the road. You friend did well to quickly stop and GTFO.

The whole interior has just melted - wow.

Sorry, but I doubt a Malaise Era '78 Buick is worth the trouble from fire damage. Those Rallye wheels still look good, though! (At least the front ones.)

images/smilies/lol.gif Ignoring the huge cost that'd be involved with doing so, the frame, engine, etc. are all toast from the heat.

The car is definitely a write-off.

That's not necessary. If Planes, Trains and Automobiles taught us one thing is that burnt down 1980s American coupes are still very much usable, just make sure you don't get pulled over.

I'm convinced that pontiac does it on purpose.

SunFire, Firebird, Sunbird, Solstice, Firefly, seeing a pattern yet?
