Don't like civics, they're just not good in my book. I own an Impreza, very reliable, its 12 years old, no issues with it at all. Go Subaru, before it becomes a Subring (subaru + sebring)

Can't believe that no one has mentioned the Mazda SPEED 3

Test drove on last night, really blew me away how good it was, and the price 22 and some change you cannot beat for 263 hp.

Really considering doing some Man Maths to afford this car.

I find the Mazda3 to be too small compared to the competition... and I hate the new wheels it comes with now... and Mazda shall never be forgiven for introducing ZoOmZoOm into our lives.

I was considering that, but I just can't get past the looks. It's just ugly and souless for me no matter how much HP it has. Now if they put that body and reliability in a GTI or Alfa.

Theoratically, the DSG should change gear faster than most avg driver, but being an auto box, launching the GTI off the line wont be as versatile as the manual version. Since drivers can adapt the clutch and throttle input according to the enviroment (wet, sandy, dry etc.) And by trial and error, the driver can eventually get the perfect launch. But then again, with the manual, it all depends on the driver's skill.

Dont under-estimate the GTI, its a very quick car. but the scooby should still eat it without a problem.
Well the new 07 GTI's and most of them can be flashed from the dealer (under warranty as called out by a TSB) to have Launch Control for the DSG. This could explain the faster then before times for the 07.
The LC allows you to rev the motor up to 3,000 rpms at a standstill in Sport Mode and just let her rip. So that would give you pretty good off the line times, and the faster up shifts will pay there.

Or just put that engine into the Focus ST, seeing that the 3 is basicly a Focus.

I would really consider taking a test drive, i was skeptical at first as well, but after dirving a new GTi and the speed 3 back to back i thought the 3 felt more composed.
