Well, after some reading, VW sucks for reliability. Audi is only middle of the road out of the Germans. The Japanese premium brands (and the Americans to a lesser extent) dominate the reliabilty studies over the Germans.

The thing I have noticed (or haven't noticed) is that VW build quality sucks. My experience in the Rabbit, Golf, and Beetle was not very promising. The plastics were cheap, and the build quality was average. I've also noticed that some of the plastics in Audis are quite cheap as well. They used to be quite handsome too, but with the coming of the new A4, I'm having second thoughts about Audis. If the new A4 and A5 is anything to go by, I will never walk near a VW again. If you ask me, magazines that review cars tend to focus on the plastics of Japanese luxury cars a bit more than German cars.

Apart from my lack of knowledge when it comes to the built quality of Mexican VW's, I can't follow you in terms of interior quality of VW and Audi.

VW Rabbit:

Audi A3:

The Rabbit surely is built on a budget and looks and feels cheaper than an Audi, but still, I find nothing wrong in those cars, neither in materials, nor built quality. At least I haven't come across any brand that was better in these departments in the same class, especially when it comes to Audi.

Occasionally we get pre-production/Euro-spec cars in the fleet, but its actually very rare that it happens...

Right now the only pre-production cars in the fleet are the 2 6spd TSX Acuras, and the only problem they had was the seal at the windshield wasn't there...

Otherwise all the vehicles in the fleet are regular production cars...

If you see any year old or same year car with about 5-20k miles on it being offered as a ex 'fleet' car, that was probably one of ours.

Once they hit the retirement age they go back to the dealer and are whole-saled at auction to other dealers...

Or for the pre-production cars, they're hauled off, stripped and crushed...
