Petrol VS Diesel

Im tired of this Diesel promoting going on here.
Lets decide it once and for all!

Keep in mind:

Petrol engines:

Make a better noise

Are more reliable

Rev higher

Develop more horses

Can develop just as much usable Torque as a Diesel

Smells better


Diesel engines:

Sounds like a truck/cab

May use a little less fuel

CAN be more relaxing as you dont have to be gearing as much. (Auto Gearbox anyone?)

Diesel : Possible fuel problems when it's very cold.
Running out of gas with a diesel engine is a bitch.

Oh yeah forgot about that. You have to wait for that bloody lamp to go off and I always forget! So:
When entering a Diesel, make sure you turn on the ignition, set the mirrors, lighting and your seat. Take a good look behind you. Sing a song, and then; start the tractor!! (That'll make it last.)

Also, considering the fact that Diesel usually puts you up with a turbo, be responsible!

How is it humanly possible to be a diesel enthusiast!?

Well if I had to get a Diesel (read, company car) I woudln't mind, but if I'm the one paying, it'll be petrol.

Well I dunno. Redline is so low, you have to move the gearshift quite often
I've only driven diesel trucks, vans and a 2.0 Nissan though, so maybe some MB's are better.

With all that "usefull torque" you can slide it into 5th (Or 6th if its one of them hey look a spporty diesel cars) and just drive along. Wouldnt increase the acceleration to much either

No that's not really comfortable (in the diesels I've driven) the engine stutters in high gear and low speeds....I voted for Diesel, because I am a fan of big diesel engines like the ones in 7series of S-classes or V10 Touareg with big turbos

However! I adore petrol engines as well, BIG petrol engines (or 1.3 Wankel) because of the sound of course and the revs. If I had to choose from 545i or 530d I would pick the Diesel, because it is cheaper in fuel, has turbo-sound and you can tow your house a on a mountain to live there

1 Vote for diesel...(Big Diesels, like I said 5 times now, no small 1.3d in a Corsa off course..)

^The only argument really being to save money. I'd rather buy an older 5-series petrol instead of spending so much money on a bloody diesel. If youre gonna spend tons of k on your car, why even think about the mileage?

And Turbo? Whats so great about a Turbo noise if a tractor engine ruins it all? Its like listening to Mozart while flushing the Toilet or puttin fish on a Pizza. Awful!

I think both diesel and petrol have their niche.
But diesels are coming and I think Porsche will have to eat up their comment that they 'never will make a diesel' in a couple of years.

But I think it'd be a cold day in hell before Ferrari rolls out a diesel

I voted for petrol because I have never driven even a diesel vehicle, nor even wanted to drive a diesel vehicle, and out of all the cars I want to own some day, only 2 or 3 were available in diesel (which I woulnd't even get).

No, without joking...

A few years ago, I used to drive 40k miles a _year_. Petrol? No way. I had a 330d at the time, and maintaining the same pace with a 330i would have _doubled_ my gas bill. No thanks. Moreover usual road speeds are where this 330d is in its sweet spot. Press throttle, it jumps, more so than the i, so overtaking is never a problem and no need to change gears, ever. Put 5th on the morning, neutral at night, that's it.

Now? I don't even do 10k miles a year, and I wanted to have fun. So I bought a low slung bathroom appliance. Thing is, it's petrol, but then Diesels are not _yet_ at the point where they can conveniently power such cars (not good enough speed range in gear, too heavy). But it's changing, and I wouldn't be surprised to see such a car coming out. The 1.9l Ecotec turbo Diesel produces 212 hp at 4500 rpm and 440 Nm of torque as low as 1500 rpm, that's more than 100 hp per litre and 200 Nm per litre. No big block can claim that.

Diesels are good for big grunty engines, petrol is good far smaller revvy engines.
Both fuels are good, but for different purposes.

I always used petrol engnes. The diesel engines gives you more economy and more MPG but sacrifies the reliabilty of the petrol ones

I vote diesel. My dad has had diesel's for years and for economy and towing they cannot be beaten. When I'm older (depending on my circumstances) I will have two carss. One big diesel for any distance drive and commuting and a petrol one (something like a vx220 or an elise) for fun. Diesels just make more sense more of the time.
