Default Porsche 914 --> the original Porsche Boxster

Yesterday I drove the Porsche 914 for the first time:

This is one of the 914's from our VW Club (the one I drove was black, and had the 2.0L engine)

Anyways, what I just want to say is I have truly never ever driven such a great sports car IN MY LIFE! Have you?

I held speeds through corners I didn't knew was even possible, the grip was unbelievable. Just plain crazy ... no 911 could hold the same speeds through those corners, said the owner (from experience)

It has a low gravity point, weighs nothing and has a great engine.

They say the Boxster was based on the 914, anyone have more info on exactly this? I have driven the Bosxter numerous times, and like it alot. But this? I'd take the 914 any day .... no question. I'm seriously considering taking one in from California....like he did.

What do you guys thnk about it? Have you driven it? I know the looks are so and so, I didn't like it the first time I saw it. But it grew on me, and a nice edition is super sexy. Sounds awsome too!

I've only "driven" it in Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed-PC game. It actually was good to drive in the game.

I've never been a fan of its looks, though. And wasn't it called VW-Porsche 914 at some point? I'm not sure, but I think the engine and gearbox came from VW, while Porsche designed the chassis and body.

You definately can't deny the 914 roots in the boxster. And like the boxster, porsche tried bigger engines in the car but never released then cause they'd be faster than the 911.

I've driven one in GT Legends, but that really doesn't count.

But it is a nice looking car. And loads of fun in the game.

the 914-6 is the only way to go with a 914, the 4's are too slow. (the 2.0 L 6 put out around 180 hp)

technically, the 914 and boxster both are the natural progression from the mid-engined, topless, light, 550 spyder, rather than the boxster being based on the 914, they are both based on the principle/ideal of the 550. though the 914 really doesnt match the 550 or the boxster because it really isnt an open cockpit.

oh, and porsche DID release the GT version of the 914-6 with an engine the size of the 911 T's, and raced it - 200 hp from the 2.0 L engine. Currently, you can get a 914 with a Chvey V-8 in it--

http://www.renegadehybrids.com/914/914conv.html

my problem with the 914 has always been getting into them - the cockpit is tiny!

Talk about engine swaps, i've got a video named 914_with_956_engine.wmv. ca. 3min incar vid from a racetrack, from the sounds you can tell it's deffo o 956 or something with a huge turbo. Can't really tell from the incar cam if it's really a 914 but if it is, it's sure a crazy machine.

I'm not sure - probably the 4 cylinder. He got it when he was in his early 20's I think. He said it handled really well. He sold it for more than he paid for it too.

I know it has a couple problems. Something in it rusts and it destroys the whole car - sorry for being so ambiguous, I can't remember what it is.

rust is a big problem with all the pre-'76 porsches (76 was the first year they galvanized the tub)

there is a ton of 1.8's around, though i cant believe he sold it for more than he bought it for unless he 1) upgraded it or 2) got it for a steal. they really arent the most sought after car (like the 944, a lot in decent shape still go for only a couple grand)

i have trouble seeing a 956 engine fit into a 914....

and moreover i have trouble seeing any 956 cannibalized to retrofit its engine into a 914...

Ugh, the 914. Im sure Porche would like to erase that from every humans memory.
I had the unfortunate incident of riding in one, and driving in one. Shit, my bone stock 90 HP Pontiac Fiero could out accelerate it and go MUCH faster in and out of a corner.
Hey, hopefully your friend doesnt have one with rust, because they tend to, you know, SPLIT APART seperating the front and rear.

On the plus side, at least it is not a 916. <<shivers in disgust>>

Imagine what a 914 would go like with a 956 motor in it.

What's the difference between 914 and 916? Thought there's only one 914 model.
