Default Secret even faster 599 launch ?

Hope this isnt a repost..

After watching the video about what, 20 hours back, I felt I needed to ask this.
The 599GTB has ths secret combo of whatnots to launch the car to 60mph in 3.5secs just by holding the downshift pedal for 2 secs, and the mannetino set to "Race" ?

Hmmm images/smilies/wink.gif

Using a special launch mode shown to us by a Ferrari test driver on hand, the computer handles traction control and shifting. Launched in this manner, the 599 squats down hard on its rear 305/35ZR-20 Pirelli P Zero tires, lifts its nose and, with nary a bit of wheelspin, pins you back into the seat as it explodes to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. Yes, that’s right, quicker than an Enzo. That’s also quicker than the McLaren F1, the Porsche Carrera GT and 911 Turbo and the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo, and a tie with the 650-bhp Ruf Rt 12.
they were talking about the special one maybe? I'll look into it a bit more

It was mentioned in evo quite a long time ago. They explained that the Launch Control button basically just saves the clutch and drivetrain from a lot of stress. It also just spins the tyres to make you look like a badass. It's far from the fastest way to launch the car. It's a gimmick.

They went on to explain the best way to launch the car but I don't remember the method. I also don't remember which issue this was in.

images/smilies/think.gif Come to think of it, that evo article I mentioned may have involved the 430 - not the 599. They both have Launch Control...

Why is it secret anyway? I don't get it - why make the car slower than it can actually be?
As for the launch control - I think it depends on the car. I just love watching the Top Gear episode with the LP640 and tha quarter mile race. The Lambo looks so quick and I suspect the launch control helped a lot (or at least I want to think soimages/smilies/smile.gif

you are all assuming it's not mentioned somewhere in the manual under the race section. it may not be as secret as you think.

Well, in MOTOR mag here they worked out a way to get the knew Porsche 911 Turbo from 0 - 100km in 3.6 seconds which is .3 faster then the 0 - 60mph claim from Porsche themselves.

Also they figured a way to launch the original Gallardo from 0 - 100 in 4.0 seconds. But i cant find that edition of the mag.

I read about the 430 scud in evo there was nothing said about this technique. I guess you saw it in a 599 related article.

it's probably secret because it puts extreme stress on the engine and drive shaft so they don't want people doing it all the time.

A lot of cars have these certain overrides, there are some for completely deactivating the traction control in some Lexus's and MB's for example.

I have read about the secondary launch procedure in several magazines, I know Evo, R&T and maybe C&D. They all mentioned that it is not published because of the horrible strain it puts on the clutch. And given Ferrari's F1 transmissions propensity to blow up that may be a good idea. How often to those tenths really make a difference. I know it is true on both the 430 and 599 I don't about the 430S. But I do recall that Top Gear wasn't the first that published the setting. I don't know who the first was but I know that I had read it before.

Yeah, just watch the power lap time in Top Gear, there's a shitload of smoke coming from the backend, and it doesn't seem to be the tires =) Clarkson claims it's in fact the clutch?

Makes sense ... doesn't the 599 have a rear mount transmission?

In fact, almost every manufacturer has a diagnostic computer which they sell to the dealer, and these can usually shut off the traction control, as well as speed limiters, abs, correct for tire size, read stuff like tranny oil life remaining, etc.

This does not invlolve the button marked LC.
Launch control is designed to save the clutch and transmission by spinning the rear tyres, which is spectacular but not fast. Instead the process is to set the mannettino switch to race mode and then, with your left foot on the brake, select first with the up paddle, then pull back and hold the down paddle for a couple of seconds. There's a beep which is the signal to mash the throttle.
