Default Speed Cameras to be replaced

...by a shaming High speed score sheet.

Quote:
BIRMINGHAM, England, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- A new anti-speeding device that shames violating drivers by openly displaying their license plate numbers is set to be installed across Britain's roadways.

The device, called the M42, was previously tested near Birmingham. It publicly displays speeding warnings to specific cars by way of their license plates, causing drivers to slow down between 50 to 67 percent of the time, said the Times of London.

The current use of speed cameras in England and corresponding fines have only been found to reduce speeding by 31 percent, the Department of Transport said.

The company that manages the M42, Atkins, has said that other benefits from the shaming device would be a reduction in the number of deaths of road workers on the country's motorways, The Times said. And it costs about half of what the most commonly used speed camera costs.

"Rather than simply punishing drivers with a 60-pound (about $114.59) fine and three points, this appeals to their better nature," Atkins Director Richard Deacon told the paper. "People tend not to like being shown up for behavior which puts others in danger."

Any idea how this works? And where exactly do they show your license plate?

And is this legal anyway? Isn't that discriminatory?

I guess its like these signs you find here saying "Your speed: xx km/h" displaying your speed with a LED display. And why shouldn't it be legal, the numberplate is on your car anyway.
Oh and could you change your signature one day, I am kind of tired looking at a turd all day.

I thought of that as well, but I think they'll do it differently, cause this would make no point at all. If they're showing "AA-BB 12 is speeding!" instead of "You're doing XY mph", where's the point in that? I wouldn't feel different if they show my numberplate instead of my speed.

I don't think I would feel different as well, and thats why I said it probably wouldn't work here. Maybe brits are ashamed easier?

I am sure Clarkson would try to set records with his GT...

And thanks for removing it images/smilies/wink.gif

Can't you get some sort of reflective coating for your license plates that reflects the camera flash? I know they're probably illegal, but the ironic thing is they'll never be able to tell! images/smilies/tongue.gif

Bad idea. Good for my license and wallet, but bad idea. We have this big electronic sign on a road literally 30 seconds away that shows your speed and flashes when it's over 30. I'm a pretty sensible driver, and even I tried to see how high i could get it on a quiet morning. It's only a matter of time until someone measures 1/4 mile back and competes to clock it the highest :/

There have been a couple of accidents and a couple people killed right there, it may or may not have had something to do with the sign but i wouldn't be surprised.

I have heard of some people getting custom plates that are hard to read.

For example:

II1I1II
00O0OO0
VVWWVWW
88BB88B8

The repeated shapes make it hard to tell which characters are which - if there is someone else with a similar plate that is even better for you.

They have the speed display thing in Malaysia as well... but unfortunetly, it doesn't help at all, it has just become who can get the highest number on the signboard competition

There's been some mobile speed display things around Melbourne for a while. There was one near my house a few months ago. The screen just goes blank when you're doing more than 80km/h images/smilies/lol.gif

There are a couple of towns here that put up big Radar signs that tell the speeds of those coming upto it.

These don't have any kind of camera or anything (there are some like speed cameras as well), but people see them, panic, and brake hard. I've seen several accidents caused by these.
This in an area that really has little important to damage if someone wrecks, and even full of long straight roads.

Oh the shame and humiliation, I'm speeding! I have brought dishonor to my family!

In America the high speed signs are mounted on the bottom of hills and in other devilishly clever places (not really). The numbers light up red over a certain speed, letting you know that YOU'RE SPEEDING AND YOU'RE A CRIMINAL, OMG! My friends discovered that if you open the panel on the side, you can flick a dial and change the speed at which the numbers turn red. Anybody going over 1mph is a speeder. 8)
