I think I read somewhere that some company was working on a diesel bike (because it has to run on JP8 like everything else in the military) for the USMC. I'm not sure about it though, and have no idea what actually became of it.
Figured one of you yanks might know more. images/smilies/wink.gif

Yes, the US Army still uses motorcycles, Kawasaki KLR650s. The Marines use them too, their version is called the M1030. They're diesel-converted Kawasakis, they start out life as KLR650s and end up with a 584cc two stroke diesel engine. They are primarily used for scouting or messenger purposes, and in the army, the cavalry scouts use them the most.

HDT (the conversion firm) just released a new model called the M103M1 (not yet officially adopted nomenclature, IIRC) that's basically the same bike with a 611cc diesel engine from IDI.

Did it survive? I read somewhere that diesel in a petrol is less worse than petrol in a diesel because the pumps require diesel as lubricant or something like that.

Ah, same as in Germany then.

I actually find the idea of owning one of these quite intriguing. images/smilies/wicked.gif

They all come standard with heated grips and those cases, some other minor stuff too. Only 25kW though...

I went and collected my bike today and OH MY FUCK IT'S FANTASTIC..images/smilies/ohmy.gif

A few questions and observations..

1. How in good god to you hold on to the bastard when accelerating?? I was finding it difficult to pull the clutch in when i gave it some on some very few occasions..

2. Turning/leaning is a lil more difficult than i thought it would be.. compared to a GS500 and my old 125. How in the fuck are people getting their knees down?? On the GS i came reasonably close to getting my knee down, on this it feels much more difficult?

3. Any tips during my learning process?

1. You get accustomed to it very quick you just have to really hold on. First time I accelerated on the delimited bike the backwards force caused me to open the throttle even further.
2. Check if the tyres have a flattened contour because of too much highway driving. Anyway the 180 tyre will require a bit more force to rotate than a 130 or 160 tyre.

You could get an Enfield. They still make them new in India and they make a diesel version...

I never heard of a diesel motorcycle before.
It must be interesting to drive something so light with loads of torque.

The handlebars are adjustable. You may rotate the hand grips forward to spread them out to get more leverage and to help with holding on.

Also, try leaning forward more, which rotating the grips will almost certainly help you do.

As for putting a knee down, moving your weight forward and getting a better hold on the bike will help. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Also, check out Keith Code's book, "A Twist Of The Wrist". images/smilies/biggrin.gif

The back tyre is new, the front is in good shape. I hold on like a bastard but then getting the clutch in well.. practice i will.. images/smilies/sleep.gif

Alternatively try to upshift without the clutch. It's easier than it sounds. images/smilies/twisted.gif

Yeah, just put a bit of pressure on the shifter with your foot, come off the throttle and it should shift up smoothly. Then just get back on the throttle.
It is only useful really if you are gunning it and at quite high revs. It is a lot less smooth than using the clutch if you are pootling around.

My time with the three wheeler is up, I've exchanged myself one of these:

Yamaha XP500 TMax. Rides like a sport tourer with the convenience of an CVT in town, took a few power rangers today on the twisties too, very easy to ride fast.

Are you leaning forward enough? I am relatively small so I already have to lean forward quite a bit. If you are especially large you might be trying to accelerate in a too tourer-like positition.

This last weekend the weather was so nice. I got inspired to clean up my ride a little bit, and take the first real pics of it (I got it in August.) I have put a little over 1600 miles on it without a cleaning, and it was starting to show. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Anyway, all better now!
