Default The most badass car at the New York Auto Show!

...is this mint GNX:

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/05/n...ent-treasures/

Quote:
Sure, most of the folks here at the NYIAS are interested primarily in the stuff that hasn't yet appeared in showrooms, but one of our favorite cars of the show was a twenty-year-old gem tucked off in a corner on the lower floor. What you see here in these photos is a genuine 1987 Buick GNX with all of 45 miles on the clock - a near-virgin example of a car that was a bit of a dinosaur even back in its day. The dated G-body platform was in its last year, and so McLaren and ASC were called in to give it a proper send-off.

What the GNX lacked in chassis sophistication was more than compensated by the highly-pressurized pushrod V6 under the hood and its electronic controls. The flares [img]and sixteen-inch snowflake wheels only increased the sinister stance of the black two-door, but still did little to convey the performance potential of this machine. It was the beginning of the end of an era at GM, and eventually the neutering of individual brands killed off these acts of intracorporation rebellion.

Two decades ago, this thing stickered for a touch over $29K - or just shy of $54,000 in today's money. The odds of such a freak occurrence happening in Buick showrooms again are probably somewhat less than the likelihood of this exact vehicle ending up in our garage, we reckon. So what's the real Super Buick at this show?

It still has the damn window sticker!

That's one mean mofo of a car.

Is that what Denzel Washington drove in Training Day? Looks pretty similar.

That had to be some really far sighted person to say "il buy it, put in storage, and abracadabra a classic" Makes me even more sure that the 1990's Ford Taurus is just a gold mine waiting to be taped.

I've heard the GNX was the most powerful Amercan car in the 80's. Not sure if that's true or not. They're quite rare too.

Before this thread gets lost in a sea of mediocrity somebody has to say it:

0-60 in 5.4s, which I believe was around what the Corvette did at that time.

For comparison, I believe the supercars (like the Testarossa) made the run in the 4.5 - 5 second range.

The car has, I believe, the power output of a modern US spec Lancer Evo.

Anyhow back on topic..sorta: Interesting fact, the longer the GN(x) stayed on sale, and the more it sold, the lower the sales got on the corvette. The only reason why Buick didn't continue with GN's is the regal (and all other Buicks) went front wheel drive.

It was the first real Muscle car since the early 70's. It showed many American's that 6>8. GN's held many 6 cylinder acceleration records for years, and probably still hold a couple. It doesn't take a huge amount of modifications to get them to go scary fast, and if you dump money into one, they become damn near unstoppable.

No foresight needed on the GNX. The GN had already gain a lot of notoriety in the 80's for being an extremely fast car at the time and for the money. Consider that when Buick Retired the GN with 300hp, the BMW M5 at the time was making less than 260hp.

The GNX is probably the most well known Mclaren tuned GM (they also tweaked on a Pontiac Grand prix or Grand am). Take an already highly respected car, say Mclaren tuned it, make it the most powerful version of that car, and it's an instant classic.

Nope, this car does nothing for me. I appreciate the effort to preserve it, but I never much liked this style of car.
