The Straight Dope on horsepower vs. torque

The Straight Dope is an exhaustively researched newspaper column, book series and website dedicated to giving detailed answers to just about any question that people can think of (take a look through the archives and you'll see that it really is any question, even if it could be considered extremely taboo).

Anyway, in the latest newsletter, there was a question regarding the difference between horsepower and "torques," as Jezza likes to call them.
