Default Vanity plates: why?

if you'll allow me to vent for a moment,

I was parking in a lot last night and I happened to catch a prius with the personalized plate "56 mpg" and I found that terribly obnoxious.

I don't think I've ever seen a vanity plate that reflected positively on the driver. no matter what it said, it just made the person look pompous and unbelievably uncool.

what are your thoughts on personalized plates?

p.s. do you think its possible to squeeze "roughly 15 or so mpg" on my plate?

I've never seen a clever or even remotely funny one. I think they're pretty pointless.

When they are good, I like them, but some are pretty stupid.

I saw one on a 1969 Camaro in the states saying Stangsux... it made me laugh

I think you're getting too worked up over a handful of painted letters on a metal plate.

They can be well done. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I know that a lot of them are pretty funny. The one you point out, however, is downright obnoxious. What a stupid twat that owner is.

BTW, can you fit "Suck-it-Prius" on your Mustang? images/smilies/lol.gif

"BY-BY-COP"

i LMAO everytime i see this plate.

oh yeah, and there is an VR6 in SA with a personalised plate that reads "M3 eater" which was pretty cool. And another one in Durban, on a Vauxhall Astra VXR, the plate reads "RIP GTI", something for the GTI drivers to read when they get smoked : )

We had an Isuzu many many moons ago with "GZUNHYT" as the plate -- I suspect most folks won't remember those commercials, though images/smilies/smile.gif

I've been threatening to get my friend a plate that says "EVO MGNT" for his Mazda 3 since every time he takes on on track Evos seem to do stupid things right around him.

When I buy my first car, whatever it is, I'm going to try to get a plate that says NCC-1701. Most people will think it's a random letter/number combination anyway.

I saw a Miata with the plate "CIGOBYU"

So naturally I had to pass him on the highway at about 95.

I was pretty surprised at the "custom plates" industry in the UK; people there are foolish enough to dish out thousands, even tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds over for a lame-ass plate.

I would get something that fits the car, but isn't terribly overdone.

Obviously, the strict (A)BC-1(23) format over here kind of limits the inspiration.

ABC-123 is a Porsche 944 cabrio, by the way.
