Default VW Car Storage in Germany

When you don't have the space to build giant parking lots like they do there, you just go upwards! images/smilies/eek.gif

Guess you don't want the parking brake to fail, huh?

Those storage silos (only two) are for VW distribution and they're part of the Wolfsburg Autostadt Car Museum complex in Wolfsburg, Germany.

I saw a section of a travel show on this. They have a whole hotel/resort and themepark kind of thing at the factory. Apparently something like 85% of customers in Germany and surrounding countries come to pick their cars up to stay at the hotel and watch their car get pulled out of the silo.

Yeh, I read about Volkswagen's Autostadt a few years ago. They've really invested money for their customers.

That would have made sense 10-years ago but now-a-days, thats a debatable statement.

I really like it - have done so since I read about it a couple of years ago. It's a great piece of customer relationship building - it'd be cool picking up your car and seeing it being retrieved - much better than just getting it from the dealership.

AFAIK most of the dealers charge a fee for delivering the car to you from the factory. This can get pretty expensive so some people choose to get the car themselves.

That is very cool!

Not quite the same but when I was in Lyon (France) my friend pointed out to me that there they do their inner city parking in multistories under the ground. There was a periscope kind of thing where you could look down into one. There's a small movie & Piccy of what I saw here:
http://www.lyon-parc-auto.com/en/sen...ble_edito.html
No automated machinery to drop off/pick up the cars, but still very cool.

I'm just envisioning buying an entire silo like that and having it built on top of my garage. Then, filling it with supercars.

"Hmm...Am I in an Enzo mood? Or more an Elise? Oh, what the hell, I'll have the Carrera GT. Oh, no, it's right at the top, and out of petrol. The Koenigsegg it is!"

I think i'm right in remembering Clarkson showing something similar in Japan in his motorworld series. You park in the bay, and it folds back and lifts up and disappears somewhere into a cube of cars parked in movable bays, then when you get back it slides it along and back down for you. Sort of like those crates of beer where you take one and another one falls into place.

I went there about 3 years ago and it's a great place for any petrol head. You can go on a factory tour (not the best car factory tour in the world, but still interesting) and then they have themed 'pavillions' for each brand under the VAG group (so SEAT, Audi, Skoda, Lambourghini, Bugatti (didn't have it when I went), Bentley and VW). A lot of it is PR mumbo jumbo, but it's pretty cool to go and look at some of the more expensive cars. There's also a big car collection and museum there too which has all the prototypes and limited run dubs and audis etc in there including a couple of the Bentley and Audi race cars. Well worth a trip if you're near Wolfsburg.

There's even a VW hotel in the town centre, but it's really expensive, and you don't get any dicount for being a dub owner images/smilies/tongue.gif

Incidently, the 'car park' is one of two huge towers where customer cars are stored prior to factory collection. They come straight off the production line and that robotic lift stacks and collects the cars. You can arrange to pick up your car there and they will go through all the normal delivery checks with you and send you on your way if you have a car to collect images/smilies/smile.gif
