Default What cars in your experience have the best cupholders? (serious post)

Please list in your experience and your domestic markets which cars you feel have the best designed and usable cupholders. They can either be ones that are presculpted into the console as static holes or those clever fold out/pop out ones that are made of 20 moving parts.

I have never owned a car with a cup-holder so I wouldn't know...

My 1997 F150 has terrible cup holders. The best ones that I have are in my tuffy console in my Jeep.

Those flimsy pop-out frames are usually on that tend to be handled and pushed, ie Saabs and Subarus, and creak and bend alarmingly even with an unopened can in them. Those sunken holes in the console are the best, but usually it's the boring cars that have them, ie Camrys and minivans. The worst cupholders, on the otherhand, were in my 1990 Nissan Maxima. They were HALF-RAISED platforms on the INSIDE of the glovebox lid! It's as if they were trying to tell me to never ever use them.

My Legacy has pop-out cupholders that are just under the HVAC. The previous owner made the mistake of using them and Im guessing after an abrupt stop, soda went everywhere. I had the pleasure of taking apart the entire HVAC and cleaning every part to get it working again.

My Civic is great. Two cupholders that hide under a hatch forward of the shifter. One is the same size as a standard soda can, the other is large enough to hold a 1 liter stainless steel water bottle. I use them all the time to hide my house keys, gate remote, and a cloth to clean my glasses.

That being said, the best cup holder is a hot co-driver.

I have YET to own a vehicle with a cupholder. Kind of annoying but I'm pretty good at sticking drinks in places that act well enough as a cup holder. Like the space between the hand brake and the the console. That has worked well.

images/smilies/lol.gif Nice.

I'd have to say the best I've used are in the Ford E-series vans I drive for work. They have a smaller recess in the bottom that holds cans great, yet will also hold 44+ oz cups no problem, at least the ones that are shaped to fit in a cupholder.

Well, the ones we have in our Suzuki Swift are not that great.. They work with soda cans, but not so much with everything else. Plus there's only two of one, so there's never any room for actual soda cans.. Since we have alle other sorts of crap stored in them..

It's pretty bad with our Fiat Multipla (yeah i know) thogh, only one cup holder, and it's useless. There is of course two more on each of the fold down seats in the middle, but they're even more useless. It's really clever thinking, make room for 6 people, but only for one drink.

The Ford Mondeo Mk 3 was quite good, the Astra Mk 4 seemed to be a afterthought and the Nissan I got now WTF??? there are two in the back and none in the front. The Japs are good on the tech but the simple things in life they don't compute.

I have the same Civic as you, when I put a half-empty water bottle in there it bounces around so much that it eventually goes flying into my passenger side footwell.

Cupholders usually fall into two problems: they have to be so big they can accommodate Wendy's Big Gulp drive-thru behemoth cups, but then they're too big to safely carry vending-machine-sized bottles of Gatorade without them flopping around annoyingly. The Civic falls into this category...but it's still better than the ones in our 1996 Nissan Sentra that's so small putting fast food cups in there not only ensures that it falls out all over the shifter and your ankles, but it also blocks the radio and HVAC controls.

Which I'm fine with, because the radio is broken anyway. Turns out, a lot of things are on that beater anyway.

i've got a little popout one in the back of my bug
then the main two shift to the side out from under the console for taller drinks
not that I really care, I usually have water bottles and can just throw them on top of the emergency break...

I love the cupholders in my Disco. While not technically stock they're official LR accessories that I added myself. They're in the perfect position so I don't have to reach real far to get to them and they don't get in the way of other things. Nothing ever feels like it's going to fall out and spill all over the place. The little insert comes out so they can easily hold a Big Gulp sized bucket of refreshment. Plus my Zune fits very nicely in there and is easy to get to.

Here's what they look like (not my vehicle):

I like my one front cup holder and the rear ones. The one front is one of those clever pop out once, it is sturdy enough, however the little spring loaded plastic flap that acts as an instant size adjustment for the cup broke pretty quickly. The two cupholders in the back are also fold out and are pretty cool. The other two front ones are retarded, they are in the arm rest and if you put stuff in there it's hard to get to the shifter (not much of a problem in my auto but as the car also comes as a 6 speed it's a retarded design).

Oh god.. I have those in my Bluebird. The worst thing about them is if you have a passenger next to you, the glovebox is resting on their knees, so even if they were bloody able to hold a cup in the first place, the surface is made uneven by the passengers legs..
