Default What's that part?

Idea came from the 911 thread/heater hoses

Basically a sort of name that part thread. No prizes, just something to help kick start yer brains on a Monday. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

This part is found in some type1 aircooled VWs, it's mounted to the firewall on the right side of the engine bay

No one is close yet, though some of you have clued into the hints I left. (yes, including the name of the file)

I'll add another: this is a factory part, not an add on.

How is an oil pump not necessary?!? I don't quite follow that line of logic.

It is and isn't not necessary. It is known to be PITA part, so there are those that did remove it, but it is not a simple or cheep job to make the car run with out it. On the flip side it would be more expecive/complex to install that part and make it work in a car that came with out it.

Hopefully I did not give away too much with that answer...

A pump for the wiper fluid?

EDIT: didn't see the post two above. I guess it's not a wiper pump then. images/smilies/lol.gif

images/smilies/lol.gif That's why it was a wild guess, in case it WAS necessary and you typed "some" by mistake.

that's easy, don't get a flat. images/smilies/lol.gif

To answer adrianpike: Aircooled VWs do have heaters, sorta... it all depends on how fast the engine is turning, faster it's going the more hot air you get. So on a cold day on the highway it'll melt the soles of your sneakers, but if you're stuck in traffic you become a human icicle.

I'll add another hint, it makes a rather odd noise. I'll post a small vid of that noise later... (once my iDisk behaves and syncs properly)

i can remember freezing my balls off in some of my dad's old VW vans and beetles. They had the worst hear I've ever experienced! Good vehicles, none the less.

OK, after some googling, I found this pic:
http://www.oldbeetle.de/intl/pcat/T1_25.jpg

It's that thing in the middle, number 38. Seems to be some part of semi-automatic stickshift transmission. It's a control valve / solenoid images/smilies/smile.gif
Phew, I didn't even know there were non-manual tranny's available images/smilies/smile.gif
