Jag have been making Daimlers for decades - I don't know when or how they acquired the brand, but generally they do a high-spec version of the XJ and whack Daimler badges on it.

Edit: Yes, Jag bought the Daimler brand, waaaay back in the 50's:
http://www.jaguarcars.com/uk/sdc/

Daimler himself died at 1890 (well, I assume that since I'm guessing the March 6 1990 date in my link below is a typo!)

So it seems there were at a time (late 1800's, early 1900's) two car companys with Daimler's name:
Daimler Motor Company Limited; and
Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschat (DMG)
Both of which seemingly had nothing to do with the other besides the Daimler name. In 1924 DMG merged with the Benz company, hence today's Daimler-Chrysler

But Jaguar and Daimler have been making cars that look just like each other for as far as I can remember, isn't it??

i'm guessing your link is right, caus daimler is only founded in 1896 images/smilies/wink.gif

it would also pretty hard to have a well known car brand in that period since the 4 stroke engine is only invented in the 1860s, and the first mass produced car is the ford model T, and that was around 1912 images/smilies/smile.gif

as most of the people said... Daimler is part of jaguar and all the higher-spec jaguars are re-badged as Daimlers... however alot of people still don't know about this... esp. in Australia where jaguars are hard to come by

I always thought Daimler is well known, had hoped for it to return for ages images/smilies/smile.gif Too bad they didn't add a V12 images/smilies/sad.gif Since I can only remember Daimlers with V12's that should have been in there in my eyes.

Did you read the links? First sentence of my link about the history of benz says he was born in 1834, so he can't have died in 1990. A bit of googling shows he died in 1900 (so my assumption was wrong)

Onto my Jaguar link: The Daimler Motor Syndicate was formed in 1893 by some Simms fellow who had met Daimler in 1890. This company then became Daimler Motor Company in 1896 (per your link) after Simms sold the rights to the Daimler name.

And I don't get your point about not being able to have a well known car brand in the late 1890's - just because the car wasn't being mass produced doesnt mean you can't have a 'car' company called Daimler in that era. Cars were being produced back then called Daimler. And we're talking about a brand that is well known *now*, whether or not it was well known in the late 1800's has nothing to do with whether or not it existed.

So just to recap
- English guy named Simms setup Daimler Motor Syndicate in 1893 after meeting Daimler in 1890. DMS became Daimler Motor Company in 1896. That company and brand eventually became the property of Jaguar in the 1950's.
- Daimler himself had setup the DMG co. in 1890 to produce Daimler cars in Germany. That company later merged with the Benz company.

I think the mercedes-benz company was always called Daimler-Benz after the merger of the DMG and Benz companies (see my posts above). Hence we now have Daimler Chrysler.

My guess is that after the DMG/Benz merger they stopped using the Daimler brand, leaving the Daimler Motor Syndicate in England exclusive use of it
