Default Why, god? WHY!? *attempts to slit wrists with a pen*

My dad just got back from the auto show this week (I missed it because I was out of town).

He informed me that at the Ford display there was a banner saying "The Return of the Edsel."

WHY?! Wha- how, who the fuck thought that bringing back the biggest flop in Ford history would be a good idea?!

Someone please tell me that my father is just winding me up, PLEASE!?

If they bring back the Edsel name, it would be swanktacular.

...I do suspect your dad was yanking your chain!

Eh, I've seen uglier vehicles than the Edsel. They do make good hotrods.

The truth is it was a great car with Self-Adjusting brakes (new with Edsel - still used today) Floating speedometer that glows when a pre-set speed limit is exceeded Transmission locks in park until ignition key turned (new with Edsel - still used today) Top portion of seats slant forward to provide shoulder support Triple-thermostat cooling system (head/block/radiator) during warm-up for increased fuel economy & heater performance Front-mounted distributor, coil, fuel pump, oil filter dipstick for easy access. Hood hinged in the front for safety Hood release controlled electronically, from inside the car. The front seats were split 60/40 for better driver comfort.

When the concept came out it had inside/outside thermometer, air suspension, power steering. Get this when it made its debut the press said it was over done and that no driver would ever need or want any of these things. The press dug its grave and its price didn't help.

The Edsel was an excellent car, and they're actually pretty nice to drive for a 50's land yacht.

The edsel was named after one of Ford's sons...

It was very advanced for its day but man was it ugly and over priced.

Sometimes being first is not the best thing. Just look at the Tucker Automobiles from right after World War II.

Just imagine...

We're all in our 60's, 70's and 80's...GM, in an effort to appeal to us elderly buyers, resurrects one of the most popular, emotional cars ever - the Aztec!

*Takes off hat*

To the 1948 Tucker, a dream realized before it's time.

Also one of my all time favorite cars. Last I heard a company was making replicas and using a Cadillac Northstar V8.

I think the Edsel was brilliant...nor because of the design, but the amount of attention it drew to the company. Publicity can be either good or bad, and both can have a positive end.

Are you kidding? The Edsel is covered in business and marketing classes as an example of what NOT to do. The whole project cost Ford millions of dollars and made them the laughingstock of the industry. People still make jokes about the Edsel being a colossal flop, it's become a part of the language. Ford will never live down the Edsel, and if they do bring it back the project will be crucified before it ever makes it to the show room.

Agreed the Edsel is a common used adjetive for badly designed, implemented and marketed products.

RE The Tucker...

Tucker's advances were ahead of anything else in the marketplace and since the Big three owned large portions of the gov't at the time it didn't take much to convince people his advances were dangerous.

Short list of Tuckers advances...

1. Power Disc brakes all around
2. Padded Dash
3. Safety cage/safety pocket
4. Headlight follows direction of steering wheel
5. Safety class
6. Pre-selector semi-manual transmission

The turning headlight did not come to modern cars untill just a couple of years ago and then it is just optional on high end luxury vehicles.

Actually, the turning headlight was on the Citroen DS for years (yes, the car came out after the Tucker, but the technology was still there)
