Worst news ever: Canada to implement speed limiting devices on all cars

Quote:
Transport Canada to implement speed limiting devicePosted Feb 9th 2008 5:30PM by Chris Shunk
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Driving

In an effort to thwart habitual speeding, Transport Canada has developed a new system that can make exceeding posted limits difficult or impossible. The device utilizes GPS and a speed limit map coupled with technology that caps a vehicle's top speed based on the legal speed of the road being traveled. Once the vehicle arrives at the predetermined speed limit, the device makes it very difficult to go any faster. For now, Canada is looking to slap this stingy speed governor on the vehicles of perpetual speeders and reckless drivers, but the technology could one day be used for all drivers. Lovely.

Luckily for drivers here in the States, a strict speed limit governor is just un-American, and legislators know it would be very unpopular politically suicidal to implement. Still, we're sure there'd still be some people willing to embrace technology like this. Heck, a lot of parents of 16 to 18 year-olds probably wouldn't mind purchasing this device to keep their teenagers in check.

That sucks hardcore, not exactly surprised though. Canada has been really dumb about speeding lately.

Makes sense for habitual speeders. No different from having to blow a breathalyser to start your car.

However! I don't see it happening for the normal driver. Too expensive, too open to bugs (what if they wanted to increase the speed limit on a road? images/smilies/lol.gif), etc. etc.

I think we have a new example to put in Webster's dictionary for the word Anal.

What in the hell is wrong with them? I mean this is the stuff that dictators read about in their manuals.

Great idea, guys, make it impossible to pass safely on the highway.

I could see this happening to habitual speeders, yes, but not to the general public - it really would be political suicide. And give up all that revenue the gov't gets from speeding tickets? I think not.

Also, the thread title was totally misleading, not to mention inaccurate.

Thanks for the misleading, irrelevant and non-factual post Danny Tran. The story is total bullshit, check for sources next time.

thered be a crack out on the internet before the things even came to service which would relabel all the roads with speed limits of 200mph and that would be funny.

still, great if you have a car with good ol mechanical controls....none of this fly by wire stuff.

If you try to disable functionality in ANYTHING, people will find a way around you. I mean, just look at how successful the DRM'd CDs were.

I'm sure you could probably break/disable it. In a way that they wouldn't be able to find out. Or if they do, can't blame on you. The thing is, if it's state-mandated, chances are the device is gonna be made by the lowest bidder, so failure would be easily explainable.

Solution: Make friends with a geek.

Bastards tried to implement speed camera on us, but they've failed. There's no reason for them to succeed this time.

I think you guys can calm down, though. This is never going to be put on all cars (a bureaucracy being efficient? Bwahahaha!).

It would never happen, sometimes you need to put your foot down and go a bit too fast to get out of danger so it would properly make it more dangerous.
