I'm sure it wouldnt be hard to bolt a standalone device to the throttle body.

And override/remove? i'm sure that would be a major major crime.

The safest speed to travel, is the speed at which the rest of the traffic is traveling.

End of story. Speed limits are arbitrary.

Has anyone ever thought of arranging a protest of sorts where a group of drivers go on, say, the 401 and do 95 km/h in every lane?

This would be a better idea if the highway speed limits in this country were more reasonable. However - when I think about it it would make sense to stick habitual speeders in "Granny-mode" all the time. Maybe then they'd figure out they don't need to be in such a goddamned hurry.

p.s. Libertarianism is but a reflexive political phase. You'll grow out of it.

This is like the breathalizers that convicted drunk drivers have to use before they can start their cars; It seems like an ok idea, because it's limited to people that have shown they aren't responsible, but I'm still against it.

Why? It's opening the doors to further use of it. It's compromising, taking the first step on the road that will lead to people saying, "well it works on offenders cars, why not use it on all cars?". By that point it wont seem like such a leap, because it will already be implimented on some cars.

This is the kind of thing the British government would be all over as soon as someone suggests it. images/smilies/sad.gif

We've had exactly the same thing come in the Singapore media, using GPS as a means of paying road tolls.......leading into the paragraph later in the story about being used to monitor speeding, illegal u-turns, illegal parking and all the rest.

It's only a matter of time.

And the story did mention several other governments were looking into the same technology and it included Canada, (sorry Graeme) the UK, and i think even Germany.

Note that in Singapore, probably because it is so small, every single car and bike must have an ICU (In-Car Unit) fitted with a Cashcard regardless of the ahe of the vehicle. It must, by law be retrofitted in cars without. This ICU initially was ONLY for the express purpose of paying tolls to enter the city but now is included at many car parks for entry and exit. Even if your car doesn't drive into the city your car must have an ICU anyway......... and the reason being is because one the method is implemented the scope just gets bigger and bigger and bigger. Naturally.

It wouldn't be that hard to just leave the entire thing in place, and then run a separate pipe and new throttle body around the existing one that's been GPS locked.

Without ECU control of the engine, especially with an ECU that cannot be replaced with an aftermarket one or have the speed limiter codes reflashed, circumvention would be relatively trivial.

So's punching out the cat or installing test pipes in most countries.......
