^ Too bad it's not actually universal... if you make a decent living, they don't cover shit. Just because I'm with the parents I basically get coverage for nothing but the most emergency stuff from the government.

I read this thread when it was posted but didn't think much of it. I stay pretty updated on local news and I hadn't heard anything about this so I wasn't concerned. But now that Bugatti's Aftershave posted those links I remember hearing about it a few years back. I doubt it's gonna happen, Canadians are pretty big on their constitutional rights and freedoms and they wouldn't take something like this sitting down. It can't be legal for the government to install a box in the car you bought and paid for and constantly monitor your driving habits.

On a similar note, they recently changed the laws in BC so the harsh punishments for street racing can be applied even if you were just speeding by yourself. Anyone hear about this? I think it's ridiculous because I don't believe speed kills, I believe idiotic drivers kill. 90km/h speed limit zones FTL.

I know someone around here with a 335i who goes 60 inside neighborhoods and 100 on the public roads. So does that mean he doesn't get punished because he wasn't street racing??? Just when I thought the Learner's restrictions here were tough enough.....

^ No it doesn't mean he won't get in trouble, it means he will get in more trouble. If you get caught speeding very excessively they can now classify it as street racing even if you're by yourself. In effect it means you can now get much more than a speeding ticket if they clock you going like over 120-130 on the highway.

I had to go through all the learner BS a while ago, so the restrictions weren't as, um, restrictive. Still though, I don't think it's that tough a system. Have you seen how the majority of Vancouver drivers drive? For everything we have in this city, we don't have good drivers.

This would be a better idea if the highway speed limits in this country were more reasonable. However - when I think about it it would make sense to stick habitual speeders in "Granny-mode" all the time. Maybe then they'd figure out they don't need to be in such a goddamned hurry.

Does old people slowing down at a green light count? Jesus christ Vacouver does have some bad drives. Because of those goddamn street racers, I need to keep my "L" license for a year of which I can't carry any more than 2 other passengers (bullshit law), I can't drive after 12AM (fair enough), and I have to drive with at least one license holder (really annoying that I can't drive alone). I just don't see why we all have to suffer because a few kids with their Civic GTR's decided that it would be a good idea to have a race in the public roads.....

^ Yeah, that's what I meant exactly. Vancouver's drivers aren't bad in that they drive fast and recklessly, it's the exact opposite. Most Vancouver drivers seem completely aloof and think they're the only car on the street. I mean heck, just a few months back I was stopped at a red light and a truck just plowed right into me, obviously indifferent to the fact that there might be other cars beside him.

Do you have an N or an L? The L was a pain back in my day too, but that only lasted six months and with the N you could do everything except even a tiny bit of alcohol was not allowed.

I've got myself an L. It lasts about a year until you take the N road test. Afterwards, you wait ANOTHER year until you get your full license.

And the story did mention several other governments were looking into the same technology and it included Canada, (sorry Graeme) the UK, and i think even Germany.

Note that in Singapore, probably because it is so small, every single car and bike must have an ICU (In-Car Unit) fitted with a Cashcard regardless of the ahe of the vehicle. It must, by law be retrofitted in cars without. This ICU initially was ONLY for the express purpose of paying tolls to enter the city but now is included at many car parks for entry and exit. Even if your car doesn't drive into the city your car must have an ICU anyway......... and the reason being is because one the method is implemented the scope just gets bigger and bigger and bigger. Naturally.
I feel sorry for those residents of Singapore, but that is only to be expected from a commie regime, however what is most disturbing is the other countries you mentioned are supposedly "democratic" if this shit happens I am moving to Aus.

Wow that sounds like a accurate description of a typical Toronto driver. The only addition I would add to a Toronto driver tends to have a complete lack of skill thanks to a huge number of bad driving schools. Its starting to sound like BC is following Ontario's road laws and license procedures

I hope you are speaking about mph, because everything else would just be ridiculous to the max. I mean can do 10-20kph over the limit almost anywhere in Europe and a small fine will be the max I get.

You can never call Singapore a communist regime, they are totally free market orientated, it is however extremely restrictive and totalitarian. images/smilies/wink.gif

Nope that's kph.

The speed limits and New driver rules suck in BC. I have to have my "N" for 2 years? I can only drive with 1 non-direct family member? WTF? Also the fact that if you have your "N" insurance near doubles. images/smilies/mad.gif

No, sadly I'm talking about KPH. Speed limits are ridiculously low in Canada, mostly 80/90 on our highways. Around where I live it's mostly 90 kp/h so you most probably won't get pulled over for anything under 115-120. Over that you might get pulled over by a radar squad (we don't have cameras, just handhelds), a lot over that and they might slap you with a street racing charge and endangering public safety.

There's no guidelines on when the street racing thing applies, but I assume if you're young and look suspicious they won't be too hesitant to use it. It really depends on the police officer, I've dealt with some really nice ones and some real pricks.

Well if they have governors on all cars - think MPs (what do you call you version of Members of Parliament?) will be doing the same speed and there will be no motor cycle outriders from the Police to usher you down the Bus lane at 70 MPH because your motor wont be able to do it! Tony Blair - I am so dis-appointed in you, you selfish git!

I think its a good idea as long as they stay with the perpetual speeders that present a serious problem and is not integrated in all vehicles. Id go crazy myself if I had to drive everywhere on the speed limit.

It would cost the government too much money in revenues to implement this thing on EVERYONE. Plus it would cost them actual money to make the devices and instal them. It would be perhaps viable as a punishment for habitual speeders (force them to pay for the device or go to jail/lose license for instance).

But I know there would be no way they'd be able to do that with my old carbureted Camaro. images/smilies/biggrin.gif It wouldnt always be practical, and all it would take is some clever swapping around and fiddling with whatever tehy got the speed signal from. You can always recalibrate the speed sensors/speedo gears to "lie" to the sensor. If it works off of GPS then all you'd have to do is look at how it limits speed - mechanically or electrically? Then all it takes is narrowing that down from there.

OF course, that may be a felony, but so is driving a car without a working catalytic converter.

couldn't you just reprogram the ecu a bit and say, take what ever the incoming gps spped limit is and increase it by 100km/h?
