Any tips.. I'm having a tough time getting the colours right. Either the whites get to bright or the darks loose all detail. Granted I don't have much experience at this.
 
That's the way things go with photography, particularly digital. Cameras just don't have the massive range of perception that our eyes do. For the most part, the dog looks pretty good, besides that the black fur is a bit dark. This can be pretty easily adjusted in post-processing or you could try using fill flash.

I have a black dog myself, and photographing it against almost any background can be pretty tricky.

im a first timer to this thread but a long time photography fan
i wont be able to manage a snap a day, but whenever i do have a nice one ill pop it up here
