Since we have a quality rap thread, why not a quality R&B & soul thread?

What do I mean by quality?

Pretty much anything that fits the condition: AnythingButRihannaUmbrella, aka good singing and a good melody.

Aaliyah - Hot like fire

Apparently Wikipedia says that song was a flop but I can't believe it. My friends and I all love it.

Whitney Houston - Heartbreak Hotel

Luther Vandross - Power of love

Boyz II Men...

I never actually realized I listened to some R&B, but seeing this thread and looking at my collection, I see I have quite a few.

Alice Smith is one I really, really like for now:

She's not very well-known, but it's good stuff nonetheless. I'm not really into the traditional R&B stuff... maybe some Motown Philly or K-Ci and JoJo if I feel like reliving high school dances (never, ever happens!).

Excellent idea! ;)

This thread is not complete without R Kelly!

R. Kelly - Gotham city

R Kelly is a friggin weirdo, but there's no denying he is one of the all time greats.

Joe is pretty good. Most of the songs that I have he's like a side singer or background singer with the exception of this one:

I know this isn't necessarily R&B, but it has Joe and it's classic

I believe it was Kriss Kross who said that R&B stands for rap & bullshit.
Interestingly enough it was on a Jermaine Dupri beat, who has been involved in some great R&B works:

I was just about to post some Curtis Mayfield, good one Jay. Although these guys are probably closer to soul than R&B.

Isaac Hayes died recently as well, poor Chef.

Love that song! Didn't even mind when Kanye stole it, because it's just such a great tune.

Speaking of Rappers, this is I guess partly a case for the rap thread, but I just love the cheesyness/RnBness of it:

Awesome songs! :p Thanks for posting the original song for the one that Kanye West sampled. Glad to always find the original tune as it's usually 10 times better than the remix.

Couple of ones from my playlist:

When Akon was actually good.

Brandy & Mase - Sittin on top of the world

Lauryn Hill - Ex Factor
