The Aviation Thread [Contains Lots of Awesome Pictures]

Is there a story behind these helicopters-lift-humvees-while-being-refilled pictures? Didn't they have a C130 around? Or no landing strip for a transport plane? Not that I'm complaining, it looks very cool...

They're in the middle of the ocean, C130s can't land on aircraft carriers. K?

Also I just found out that it was announced back in May that Canada's getting F-35s in like 2017. I is slow, but it's not exactly a surprise since there's no other fifth generation fighters for sale and the F-35 is looking like it's going to be the only western fifth gen fighter. Hey, allies, you all use the same stuff as us!

Not entirely true.

They can BUT all other flight ops have to be suspended while the Hercules is on deck.

On the topic of the C-130 my favorite one is the Credible Sport variant. Designed to take off and land in the space of a soccer stadium, but it didn't end up working very well, impressive to watch though.

The CH-53's took off from the Amphib under a heavy load and needed to be refueled before getting where they were going, simple as that.

They never should of gotten rid of those, they would be great assets for use in Iraq and Afghanistan. Much cheaper than wasting parts and airframe hours on the fast jets.

On a neat side note besides the Harrier they were the only fixed wing combat aircraft to operate off amphibious assault ships.

 heavy liftage

Speaking of Hercs, a Hercules flew over my house a couple days ago and I was amazed at how quiet it was. I couldn't see the props but I suspect it was a Super Herc because it was quiet (relatively speaking, of course). I don't know why but foreign military cargo planes come through our air base a lot, so it could have been an RAF C-130J. Canada's ordered 17 C-130Js and we're set to start getting deliveries on them next year, but I don't think any will be coming here since they're supposed to be replacing older CC-130E models and the local air base has CC-130H(T)s (which are awesome and the only air-to-air refuelling capable C-130s in Canadaland)

Nice plane! :p

The refueling models are what I get to work with everyday. It's cool working on something that's more than just a cargo hauler. And I was amazed at how quiet the planes are too especially compared to smaller turboprops like a King Air. Those things are loud!

FALSE!!

C130-Forrestal.jpg

The Hercules holds the record for the largest and heaviest aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier. In October and November 1963, a USMC KC-130F (BuNo 149798), bailed to the US Naval Air Test Center, made 29 touch-and-go landings, 21 unarrested full-stop landings and 21 unassisted take-offs on the USS Forrestal at a number of different weights. The pilot, LT (later RADM) James Flatley III, USN, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his participation. The tests were highly successful, but the idea was considered too risky for routine "Carrier Onboard Delivery" (COD) operations. Instead, the C-2 Greyhound was developed as a dedicated COD aircraft.

The Navy once had an interesting habit of evaluating USAF kit for carrier usage and then writing it off as "Too risky" - they did the same thing with the F-111 (though the weight of the 111 supposedly did damage to the carrier deck) and then went and built the damned F-14.

I'm wondering if I should file an application with Cathay Pacific to become a commercial pilot.....

I can't believe I have to bump this thread.

Why don't you all just go view airliners.net?

We work hard to get photos on there. :(

Custom liveries, especially the Formula 1 ones were always amazing to look at:

It was a fly past demonstration at MAKS (http://www.bestrussiantour.com/jet_flights/maks_2009) showing off the newest Russian aircraft.

Commercial aircraft is the SSJ-100 Sukhoi Superjet 100 (Info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Superjet_100 ). The closest combat aircraft flying is a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-35 (info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan_MiG-35 ), in the background in the grey camo is Sukhoi Su-30MK, and in the other camo is a Sukhoi Su-35BM.

The big shame about the SSJ-100 is that it'll probably be quite competitive with the West, but will never fly here due to Russian politics. I am going to have to go to Russia and fly on it, that is for sure.
