Think the Chevy Volt is a car for idiots? Audi's president agrees.

Exactly. De Nysschen makes a good point. But at the same time the Volt will sell, simply because there are idiots in the world who will buy it.

It will sell but I don't think that it will sell well. Simply because the price puts it beyond the budget for many people. Most people I know (middle class) get 20-25K cars and even then its somewhat of a burden.

Considering you can get a V8 Hyundai Bentley knockoff thingy for this 40 grand, why the hell would you want a Volt?

Oh but if GM actually did something that made sense and didnt release a useless, impractical, overpriced electric car all the sheep will whine about how the oil companies are colluding to keep electric cars off the streets. These things STILL arent ready for primetime. They're just not. Sorry. We've got big technological hurdles to make them work.

But now that GM is government owned, they have to push forward the socialist environmentalist agenda for the sake of the progressive party in control.

Which, ironically, will only make GM even more of an absolute failure and ensure their eventual demise.

if fuel economy is important to you: small diesel engine.

my words exactly. I agree with Audi's executive, if you want fuel efficiency go small and diesel. But I'm hoping the Volt will be a success, we also need petrol-based fuel efficient cars as well as diesel ones.

On another note, I've just returned from a trip in US and I'm sorry but as long as cost of fuel in US is still around $3.00/gallon or $0.70-0.80/litre, US will never learn to start buying smaller more fuel efficient cars. We rented a big Nissan SUV with a 4.0l V6 and its 80 litre tank cost only $50 to fill-up, that's so cheap, it doesn't really make sense to go into an eco-box.

The situation is much much different over here in Europe, where the governments are raping us with fuel taxes. Fuel in Czech Republic costs roughly $1.7/litre so to fill-up my diesel hatchback costs $80-90 (my tank is 50 litres). So my conclusion is that if I lived in US, I could easily afford V6 or even better a V8 :D. But here, there'd be no way I could afford paying for fuel of something that does 20 MPG.
