OK guys, so my friend came back from Monza and kindly brought me a piece of debris he found on the inside of the exit of the 2nd Lesmo.

Here are the pictures with paper/hand for scale:

To me it looks like the rear crash structure (due to the lack of paint and shape). But I'm not sure if it's from an F1 car, or a GP2 car (or anything else), and when the crash happened. The silver sticker has a Canadian flag on it.

The rust on the bolts also suggests it's quite old. It was found inside a tire in the barrier. So, what car and what crash do you think this might be from?

Feel free to ask more about it (or for more specific pictures). Good answers will get +rep.

Damn, I'm struggling to think what cars went off on the exit of Lesmo 2 and into the wall in the last 10 years... I can only remember Hakkinen crashing there in 2001 in practice. Could you post some more angles of that piece? Was it part of a rear light assembly, I wonder, or just part of the crash structure?

The screws on top look like a mounting point for a light, but in F1 lights are all the way at the end of the crash structure, the structure doesn't protrude like it would here. So perhaps it's more underbody...

This is all I can find of the MP4/16:

So you can't really tell...

So what other angles would you like?

Well, I do know that some teams adopted a swept-up rear light structure, but I'm really not sure. And judging by the chunky aspect and the size of the piece, it could only come from the rear crash structure/rear light area. Side impact crash structures are buried within the sidepods, and it doesn't look like it came off a car's nose.

I'd really like to see that angled/sloping face of the piece head-on.

I've just looked at the rear end of the Williams FW27 and it looks as this piece might belong on one. I've remembered that Heidfeld crashed a FW27 at Monza during testing. Problem is, I don't know the location.

EDIT: Checked on Formula1.com's archive and Nick did indeed crash at the Lesmos. So there's a chance this bit might be from his car.

Can't seem to see it on the car...You mean under the light structure?

Here are pictures from angles that would look similar to looking at the car head on from the back:

The Heidfeld testing accident does make sense, as if it was during a race, obviously the fans would have gotten hold of it. This just looks like a marshall wanted to get rid of it quickly and then forgot about it.

Perhasps around the rear underfloor area? Definetley rear, but looks so odd..I say it's not from an F1..GP2, F2, F3000..but I doubt F1..

I'm taking wild guesses here, does Formula Renault/Ford run in Monza?

The piece seems much too simple to be of an F1 or even a GP2..for my taste atleast.

How about F3? Does anyone have a good picture of the back of an F3 car?

but F3 and below dont run Carbon fibre do they?

yeah they do, not as much as F1 but they have some parts in CF.

- edit : Doesn't look like its from an F1 car.

Maybe it's from a Lemans car when they had LMS Euro series in Monza. Not sure if anyone crashed in the 2nd Lesmo tough, just a thought.

It could be from any type of race car, carbonfibre is a pretty common material nowadays.

That's a question that beggs a godlike knowledge of motorsport man, all of us can only guess on what car was that piece of carbon fibre attached to. They do run an awful lot of different motorsports in Monza including touring car championships, formula renault 2.0, renault clio cup, Superbike and other bike championships. Since I'm rubbish at motorcycles and touring cars I can only guess they use carbon fibre as well so maybe it could have come from there.

For anyone who's interested in seeing what's up this year there here's the official calendar http://www.monzanet.it/eng/calendario_completo.aspx
