The cars you learned to drive on

I learnt to drive (as in: make a car move without destroying iy) on this:

Fiat 126. It was great fun to drive.

Only it was dark red, not road legal (too old and battered) and with practically no brakes left. Never went on a road with that one.

I learnt to drive (as in: move around on a road) in this:

only in grey. And diesel. It is, by far, the worst car I've ever driven. But maybe it is because it was constantly abused by people unable to drive properly.

I would like to inform you that the 126 is awesome in my book! I mean, just look at it!

Auto Motor & Sport Sweden organized a race for 126's this past weekend, they raced 28 Fiats from Poznan in Poland to Stockholm.

My dad had one in Red, after he had 2 FSO Syrena's, the Fiat's arent fast (to be honest, a moped is sometimes faster) but they are so cult, Poland without the 126p isnt the same, i'm glad there are still plenty of them on the roads! :)

1991 Toyota Corolla, 198,000 miles, rusty as can be, and 100% road legal.

(2000 Pontiac Grand Am. ^That one.)

1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

The back passenger side door was jammed shut so all back seat passengers had to enter through the door on the drivers side and just slide over. It had an overheating issue so we had to rig a switch to control the fan on the radiator. It had keyless start. That is the switch was broken so anyone could just walk up and turn it on. Had to make sure it was locked up before leaving it anywhere.

I loved that car.

Good ol' reliable Toyota Camry with the V6 engine. It was fun to drive and was built like a tank...

until I side swiped a guard rail.

No matter, it still drove, and by the time I got a new car for graduation, I donated it. I still miss it though sometimes.

I learned to drive slow on this:

It wasn't hard.

I'm an old coot, but I have (surprisingly) managed to find some non-sepia pictures of the cars I learned to drive in:

An Alfa Romeo Giulia Super:

The one we had was a 1966 model (the pictured one is slightly later) .. which eventually became my first car.

I also had a few lessons from dad in his Standard Vanguard Six Station Wagon:

This car was frightening to drive. The steering wheel didn't seem to be connected to the wheels (despite the amount of effort needed to turn in!) and the wheels felt like they were square .. the cross-ply tires took about 10 minutes (of driving) to warm up. It had a rather strange induction noise too .. sounded more like a steam engine than something fueled with petrol.

I learned to drive in Ford Mondeo (3rd gen, 2L petrol), Volvo S40 (2nd gen, propably 2L petrol too, can't remember), VW Jetta (5th gen, 1.9TDI).

And BMW 320 E46. Only drove it once. On the skidpad. :p

First car of mine, just like the one in the photo but light blue. Learned to drive with it. Many memories pop up every time I get in to a 80's volvo. They're really fun cars, especially the 340. It's light, cheap, RWD with a manual gearbox, what else could you possibly want for a first starter and learner car. Great winter fun too, if you know what i mean ;)

A Volvo S60 Bi-fuel at my driving school and conveniently a Volvo S60 at home as well.

Speaking of which. The ultimate swedish 80's car has got to be the Saab 900. It's probably a hundred times cooler than that horribly looking Volvo 340.
