I'll stick with the cooler and less demanding, albeit slightly slower, ATi HD 5800 series this time around. Hopefully the 470 puts some pressure on the 5850 but the 480 looks much more hopeless. Competition broods price wars then the consumer always wins!

Meh. In some instances it's a bit faster than the 5870 (10%) and in other cases/reviews they're about equal....all the while costing more and using a lot more power and making alot of heat. The GTX 470 is even more disappointing as it is about even in performance with the 5850 but has all the negatives tacked on: higher price, more power draw, more heat.

I just sold both of my GTX 260s on Fermi launch day (friday) and was hoping to see Fermi blow the 5800 out of the water and then pre-order one of these beasts, but unfortunately that did not happen. Being 6 months late to the party, nvidia shows up with quite a disappointing package IMO. I just picked up 2 Radeon HD5850s, and after some CrossFireX and overclocking, will be enjoying 5970 performance for the same price as a GTX 480.

For the absolute top-end comparison, it'd be interesting to see 4 HD5870s in QuadFire go up against 4 GTX 480s in QuadSLI.

Don't forget these are first gen drivers. I imagine they'll get quite a bit more out of the card as the drivers evolve.

Very true. The ATI cards have gained quite a bit of FPS since their release as the drivers matured. Hopefully as nvidia drivers mature the beastly hardware that is Fermi, and it is quite beastly I do not deny that, FPS will go up in healthy amounts!

I remember a few years back where a single driver release resulted in about a 10-15% increase in FPS in quite a few games. Amazing what a difference drivers make.

It's loud and it uses too much power for marginal gains. Sure, drivers might make it faster but it will still be a loud easy bake oven that uses way too much damn power. I think nVidia has made a mistake with this one.

You know what this reminds me of? The geforce 5800 ultra...

That's the first thing I thought when I first heard the fan.

The big problem with all of those review is thast everyone did the loaded temp test with the fan at only 70%. AT 100% the fan is very loud but it do get the the card to 85c max which is reasonnable. But yeah, the gtx480 is not aimed at air cooling user(about everyone except xtreme people) Now if you watercool it or get it for benching, it will break every single record. It is also supposed tobe like 170% better than a gtx285 for folding. SO for watercooler, thats the card that can do everything better than anyone else, just need enough stuff to cool it down.

Simple solution: buy the card now, install an aftermarket cooler down the road.

I'd say wait a bit. Nvidia announced that the first ones will be the "cut" models with 480 and 448 Sps, and, as always, there will be a problem with cooling and power consumption (duh). GF470 seems like a complete waste, though, loses (or ties) 5850 everywhere.

Yeah, they were having issues with TSMC yields, the GTX 480 is gimped to 480 and the 470 is gimped to 448. Rumor has it that GTX 485 will launch with 512 sp that was originally intended for the 480. Of course by that time, there are also rumors of a HD5890 from ATI, so we shall see.

well the reviews have been released, and judging from all the results, it seems like nVIDIA is gonna have a tough time outselling ATI's HD58xx series.

The big issue is that, with the exception of a few exclusives all games are released on all 3 platforms - PC, 360, PS3, meaning that graphics and effects are stuck somewhere in 2007-08, therefore you don't even need this kind of performance at all, let alone cooling problems and power usage. In a battle G480 vs A5870 the latter is in a very good shape, - at least 100$ cheaper, quieter, requires less power with the performance handicap of 10-15%, but I'm not sure abput ATI drivers though.

May I point you towards GTA4? Or BC2? Or MW2? All of those games look significantly better on the PC. After playing MW2 on med/high settings for many months, I was stunned at how crappy it looked on the 360. The game may be basically the same, but you can run way higher resolution (few consoles render at 1080p while I do on my PC) and way higher textures and models. They basically set it to "low" or "medium" settings for the console.

One of the reasons I'm planning on getting a GTX 470 is to that I can run BC2 better. I run 1920x1200 with no AA on med/high settings. I want to crank it up to max with no AA.
