One of my brothers is a fireman, he'll tell you that firemen are the least capable at setting fires. He's watched as 4 men, with what amount to flame throwers, couldn't back burn a brush fire here in Southern California, and yet the fire they were trying to slow down? Started by some guy flicking a cigarette out his damn car window.
My family used to raise emus a few years ago. The guy we bought them from used to raise ostriches. I say "used to" because he got out of it after a horrible incident.
They had the ostrich distracted on the far side of the pen, while someone went in to grab the egg to put it into the incubator. The ostrich saw him, jumped up (knocking over the person laying on it to half-way hold it down.) It tore across the pen, and kicked the guy in the neck, killing him. It was the farm owner's brother.
Apparently, most Ostrich farms have their fences starting 18-24" off the ground. It's not so much to make the fence that much taller, it's incase an ostrich runs after you, you don't want to have to run for a single gate.
