The General Motorbikers Discussion Thread

So, I was reminded once again why I hate most of the people that ride new full-dress Harleys.

Apart from the fact that they shake your windows off/make you reach for your earplugs every summer when they ride to Laconia?

or do like my brother, and get one of these (well, he got 5 in sorry state, has 1 driving, is building another and has plans to make a final one into cafe racer)

250cc 2-cyl 2 stroke, he can also drive it with a small license
and if you drive with a small license for 3 years, you can get your normal license for just some administrative cost, no exams are taken...

A 25kw license is valid for 2 years and costs just as much as a full license.
And you have to take the exact same tests as for a full license, but with a 25kw engine instead of minimal 35kw.

30 years and nobody's made a cheaper in-tank fuel filter for the CB550?

That plastic bit costs 15 cents to make. They sell it for $30.

:bangin:

Same one on the CB750s.

But the real reason is that everyone just went to external filters instead. :p

The real gotcha on the manufacturing of those is the double-threaded nut. That's surprisingly difficult to make well.

Well, guess what? I have two of those. I don't need that damn thing. :x

External inline filters are great and all, but the in-tank filter benefits from constantly sloshing gasoline that washes dirt and grime from the outside of the filter, unclogging it but still preventing it from getting into the petcock. It's effectively self-cleaning. The inline filters will need to be replaced periodically, no matter how cheap they are, and won't prevent the petcock from getting dirty as well. They also need to be attached to a relatively straight part of hose, and judging from the ass-tight connection Honda thoughtfully provided between the fuel lines, that's not happening. (I could put the inline filter in the middle of the carburetors, and have fun spilling gasoline everywhere while I nudge my fingers in there to change it.)

General consensus on the SOHC4 Forums is that there's a reason Honda went with the in-tank filter, and they're durable enough to last. $30 for the whole set, though, that's just price gouging. And I'm bewildered that nobody's taken it upon themselves to make some otherwise.

The in-tank filter element used to be available separately, both from Honda and from aftermarket sources.

Nobody bought it.

Probably because they lasted so long. :p

Well, up until you removed the petcock and it caught onto the threading of the fuel tank, which ripped it...

Also, got a link? I'm not finding a separate part number for the filter, but merely the entire rebuild kit. I found one for an MS50, not sure if it'll fit.

They're NLA and have been for 10 years and more now. I got one of the last ones for my then CB750K around the turn of the century. At the time, the dealer personnel were saying that because people were having to order the rubber bits and such anyway they were just not going to stock the filter elements any more.

There's also a trick you can use to get those out without ruining them (usually).

Pushing a 76 goldwing 100 yards up hill, in the pouring rain, with sticking front brakes blows.

Tonight, for some unknown reason, Spectre and I decided to move my wing from his shop to my apartment's garage, despite the tropical storm. We made it, and got it there...barely.

Hey, we didn't die. Weren't even significantly injured.

Got a bit soaked, but that's nothing new.

Going to look at helmets on Saturday- found out a really cool shop in my area (purely sells scooters, and specialises in Vespas) stocks Nolans, and also has the MotoGP edition Nolan in (which I absolutely love the design of). Can't wait!!!! :D Thanks to everybody with their suggestions too- only problem with most of them (eg Arai and HJC) is that they are not common in my area, and the ones that are stocked are the most expensive ones. I am looking into a Shoei TZR/XR1100 (depending on what i can get locally), Suomy Defender (again, if I can get one) or a Nolan. KBC is also on the list, as my parents have both had/have one (dad's got wrecked when he high-sided) and they love them.

(need to look at gloves too, keep forgetting about that!). And I love the look of those Alpinestars shad_68, red, white and black is my favourite colour scheme! (my helmet would be those colours except they didn't have it in stock in my size).

yes, but you can take it at 18, drive a 25kw bike for 3 years, and the moment you turn 21, you can go pick up a normal driving license almost for free

Believe me, I live three miles out of Laconia so I deal with that crap every year. <_<

Well, here's a funny story.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=618432&ref=nf

Basically some kids got caught trying to steal someones bike, police got called, and the police let them go. However, this was at deals gap, and if theres one thing that there is alot of at The Dragon (besides cops and bikes) it's photographers. Yep, high-rez photos of the their faces, their car, and even the license plate.

I'm surprised they aren't dead. Trying to steal somebody's motorcycle is just about the worst thing you can try to do to any group of motorcyclists.

If you don't fix it soon, I wouldn't be surprised if you find bits of PC800 plastic in its grille.

Maybe I can convince it to eat the neighboring ricer shop's Honda Civics instead?
