If she spends 10 mins cutting 2 pieces it means she spent 5 mins cutting each piece.

No because she didn't cut each piece. She only cut one piece. She only made one cut, once, and it took 10 minutes. She can't cut any faster than that. The implication here is that some how, some way, she could cut the piece of wood in half and only end up with one piece and that somehow she would have magically saved half the time along the way somehow, even tho she still made just one single cut which up to this point has cleary been taking her 10 minutes. And that's not text book logic... that's just crazy talk.

If you want it cut in five minutes why did you give the job to a woman in the first place? Pfft, a woman using a saw to do manual labor.... The whole thing is just a load of nonsense from start to finish.

It would take 15 minutes if she had a board and was cutting out shaped pieces out of it or cutting off measured pieces from a very long piece of wood, thus discarding the large piece of left-over wood. But the way it's worded, the student was right and the teacher a dumbass.
