The awesome boats thread

The new Type 212 boats are awesome... but I'll take a Virginia class any day. Or an SSGN.

In advance Sorry for the big picture dump of the RMS Queen Mary 2, but I just love that ship. She is certainly the most awesome commercial ship currently in service... First the nice shots I took this morning, nice and sunny, worked well with the polarizer.

So I went back to see the RMS Queen Mary 2 depart. Weather looked nice when I left home, but it turned dark and rainy as I walked down to "my spot" at Aker Brygge in Oslo...

Then there was this moment, when despite bad conditions you find something interesting. During heavy rain, the QM2 was lit from a slight crack in the clouds. I think it looked kind of cool...

For some reason, I kept the polarizer on, don't ask me why...

Then after rain, comes a rainbow, now that looked nice...

I went as far out on to the guest docks as I could get, wasn't easy to hold the camera straight, as it's of the floating type...

Now I finally managed to nail it from dead straight on, looks seriously imposing from here... Imagine being in your small boat and see this come towards you...

As she completed her turn and went past me, I gradually ran out of wide angle on my 12-60mm (= 24-120 EF) zoom lens

Finally, just rounding of with a shot of her rear end, beautiful...

Truly epic ship, shame they didn't clone this for the Queen Victoria and Queen Elisabeth (3...?), in stead of making just another couple of vistas... I regret incredibly that I never got the chance to see the RMS Queen Elisabeth 2 and the SS Norway... :(

By the way, crossing the Atlantic on her costs from about $1000 (per cabin, not per person) each way, more expensive ones are usually sold out long in advance... So if you don't like the TSA, and you're going to Europe, and you'd like to spend a week doing it old skool style, then yes you can... :p

That will get a prominent place on the bucket list!

It's impressive, indeed. I often see these two come at me in a small boat [/url]

Better make room quickly...
Ah, the Color Fantasy/Magic twins... Seeing as I live in Oslo, I have seen them several times. They are after all the worlds largest cruise ferries...

Warning: Picture dump again... :p

Yeah, Norway's two largest hotels sail by my office every day  and they leave in the early afternoon, meaning every sailing day in the fjord equals a meeting with them somewhere.

They look so much more classy than the two new(ish) Stena Germanica / Scandinavica ferries. However, those two have finally revived the train lines to the harbor, I  seeing cargo on rails.

The Japanese tried it in WW2 with moderate success... I-Class I believe, though I could be way off.

The I class submarine has been preceded by the french submarine SURCOUF.
When it was launched in 1929 it was the biggest submarine of the world.
Not only did it have a seaplane but also a turret with 2X203mm.

It was lost at sea in 1942 with all of its crew : more on the SURCOUF and his infortunate fate with this link
