In what is surely to be a long teaser campaign, BMW has released first details for the production ready M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology).

Previously revealed as the BMW M3 GTS Sedan Concept, the lightweight model is basically a sedan version of the M3 GTS Coupe, the most extreme 3-Series-based factory car of the current E92 generation. Unfortunately the extra two doors bring a little extra weight - 90 kg (198 lbs) to be exact, making for a total of 1580 kg (3483 lbs), but still 45 kg (100 lbs) lighter than a stock M3 sedan.

The saved weight is in due part to the carbon fiber hood, seats and roof as well as the titanium exhaust. Design tweaks include blacked out twin kidney grilles with matching hood vents. Fender side blades accented in red along with a carbon fiber luggage lid spoiler. Inside, special rear seats, door sills and door panels get carbon fiber and aluminum decorative trim.

Although not officially released yet, the powerplant from the GTS Coupe is expected to transfer over to the M3 CRT. That engine is a 4.4-litre V8 based on the 4.0-litre engine found in the standard M3. Maximum power is 450 PS (331 kW / 444 bhp) an increase of 30 PS (22 kW / 29.5 bhp) and the transmission is the 7-speed M dual clutch transmission (M-DCT) with adapted shift characteristics. The M3 CRT runs 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds - 0.3 seconds faster than the standard M3 sedan. Top speed is 290 km/h (180 mph).

Utilizing the same 19-inch aluminum wheels as the GTS Coupe, tire sizes are slightly narrower with 245/35 tires up front and 265/30s at the rear. Front brake discs are 378 x 32mm at the front and 380 x 28mm out back and get squeezed by six piston calipers.

Sounds good, right? Well, don't get too excited as the limited edition will only be available to 67 well connected BMW customers. Price in Germany will be EUR 130.000.- incl. VAT. So, keep dreaming BMW fan boys.

Fokken hot.

I want.

A whole 67 of them. Well, isn't this just exciting?

EDIT: I don't see the difference between this, and some random tuner throwing $5k at a standard one. I'm sorry, I just don't. Same with lots of other "special" editions. It's all just marketing filler.

That's nearly twice the price of a stock M3! But given the exclusivity it'll probably hold value well.

Sedan > Coupe.

Now give us a wagon dammit!

So will the superlightweight version be called the LCD?

Red trim is fugly. No manual, no care.

Also, 130k Euro is $185k USD, according to Google. Give me a standard 335i for $40k and $10k to mod it and it will be faster than this M3.

But it's exclusive! That's worth it's weight in platinum!

Pricetag = fail.

The way car prices work, it's more likely worth $130k USD, but that's still absurd unless the thing has a 600 HP V12 in it or something.

So will the next M3 special version be called the M3 TFT (Too Fast Technology) & the M3 LCD (Lightweight Cornering Dynamics) with a LED (Lightweight Energnetic Diesel) option?

If I had that kind of money to spend on a performance sedan then I'd be shopping in M5 territory at the very least. It's just ridiculously expensive.

Actually thats a good point. How would this stack up to the M5 performance wise. I mean if you want a stupidly fast 4 door sedan you might as well go for the M5, it will have more room since presumably you want more room hence the 4 doors.

A bit slower in a straight line, but quicker around a race track (as the standard M3 is) ... I'd presume.

The next model will actually be the M3 IPS, as in Insane Pricetag Special
