The worst roads in the world!

What does the ABS do that makes it scary? Too limiting?

And Andy - when I get my car and my P licence in January, I know I'll be heading down there :D

I guess it depends on sensitive the ABS is. On some cars it kicks in too early on slippery surfaces, so you lose braking performance.

Also, after all these years, people also get a bit freaked out when ABS first kicks in. They feel the pedal pulse and release the brakes. In fact, you should mash the pedal to the ground and let it do its job.

The suspension is so hard that the wheel gets airborne and locks up. The wheel then touches the ground and its released. Well thats what we belive is happening. The wheel mustn't get airborne for long....well thats all we can put it down to. All I know for a fact I've had some scarey experiences in cars with ABS, very hard suspension and rough roads

Another one was ABS on a track in sand traps.......a MX5 at Mallala (race track near Adelaide) went strait on into a concrete wall through a sand trap. The driver evidently stamped on the brakes but the ABS unit left the brakes off and the car kept going.

Don't worry this isn't a Anti ABS post.....I actually quite like it :)

It has nothing to do with slippery surfaces....the brakes cannot work if the wheel is not in contact with the road....lol..... ;)

Someone tell that man to put some pants on lol.

That is pretty awful but not really a road in this condition. You want really crap ones I give you the M25 and the A205:

M25

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M25_motorway

So under engineered that it is being widened nearly throughout its length. Full of speed cameras and gantry warning signs plus the only road I know of with enforceable variable speed limits using electronic signs.

A205

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A205_road

So what we have is the main southern London ring road that for much of its length is single carrageway and where it is not has bus lanes on it - great.

HAHA, I see a Cortina on a trailer in that picture. GOLD!

This is a pretty bad road, you have no chance in winter, its a rediculously steep road called Hardknott Pass in Lake District. People who like the bottom of their car should beware.

Thats the average, some of the corners are too steep to walk up on the inside. Theres not a lot of pics though.

Sydney is also home of the most useless roads in world. Most, well all of them use electronic tolls. Companys try to funnel motorist into them by closing streets but the motorists went around causing more traffic. Lots of businesses on the closed streets ended losing business and closing down.

you have to visit the great ocean road, road isn't that nice but the drive itself is awesome :D... maybe we could have a FG reunion drive there when more AUS members come abroad :D

The road isn't that nice? You must mean the surface itself (which is not that bad at all), as the road itself is a rare motoring playground. Apparently there's some amazing views too - can't say I've noticed :p

I was talking about the surface, some of it is quite old and I remembered there were several potholes.

^ I think they've been doing a lot of work on it lately - last time I went down (approx 6 mths ago - hmmm I think I'm due for another run...) it was in great shape.

Looks like a Lotus Cortina as well...

BTW, you really do not want to get me started on road conditions here in Mexico, it would be one of the main reasons for wanting to go back to the UK!!! Old footpaths in the UK are better than our main roads here, and A-roads are better than our toll motorways!

You here a lot of horror stories about the London Orbital, I am not a regualar user but when ever I have used it traffic flowed as well as any nther motorway. Leaving the orbital who has tried to mavigate the streets London in a car. I just give up last time I was there parked the car at Brent Cross and commuted in with the tube. Any1 who has used the inderground will tell you it is not the best of transport methords but it is far better than a car on narrow congested streets.

Sydeny is said to have the worst roads in all of Australia. Don't know where that fits in the global scale. :p

Ever driven the Great Ocean Road in VIC? It's supposed to be the best and I can't wait to find out....

In parts of Canada we have roads made totally out of ice. No concrete, no lights, no lines, no shoulders and no place to stop for fuel; just hundreds and hundreds of miles of feet-thick ice that melts in the summer.

^--- guy was driving too fast probably, thats what cracks the ice (uneven pressure wave) :p

AutoMX,

Someone has been watching The Discovery Channel's "Ice Road Truckers"

They don't look too bad, just busy.

Just to keep the thread going, PA roads have consistently been on the worst roads in the US list's Top 5 for years now.
