Stebel air horn installation help

My friend had an old Stebel air horn (GP2) set that we tried to install on my car (Scion xB). It's composed of an electric air compressor, two horns, and the connecting tubes. He did not have a relay (but it should have one). So we hooked it up but it didn't work. I've attached a crappy diagram of how we installed it.

I'm guessing the relay is needed, or maybe the compressor died somehow. Given the information and specs of the horn kit, what parts do I need to get this working? Thanks!

Get out your voltmeter! :p
 
Check if you ground the compressor properly.



1) Unplug the compressor.

2) Put the DC voltmeter's probes on the horn wiring, and the location of the ground...

3) It should read around 12V.


If it reads 12V then it might be a bad compressor.

I don't have a voltmeter, so what I'll have to do is get the relay (I found out I need a 4-pin model rated for 30 amps) and if that doesn't work then I need a new compressor. In that case, I will just get the smaller compact model that's normally used for motorcycles. That way I can mount it where my existing horn is.
 
Sorry I mistaken a relay for a fuse :p




Do you have the circuit schematic? I want to see it out of interest.

This is similar to mine except it's for two horns and mine is for a single horn.

I think the wire from the horn button wasn't providing enough power. The relay should solve the problem. or if you really want to check...

1) disconnect the battery.
2) hook the compressor (without the horn part) to the ground and a wire from the battery source.
3) reconnect the battery. the compressor should run immediately.

Check out page 3 of this article. http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/hweb2.pdf. The circuit is slightly different... they ran both power sources from the horn button, instead of one from the battery.
 
I bought a relay today, got it to work now! It's pretty loud, but nothing compared to train horns...

I had to move one of the horns to a different spot because I noticed the tire was rubbing against it at full right lock <_< It's hard to explain, just trust me, it wasn't in a good spot. So today I pulled off the bumper and relocated it using some random L-bracket I had laying around.
