A little thing called PREFERENCE.

Truth be known, if I was to live in London, the car would be parked and yes, I would be cycling, too. London seems to be a very anti car city at the moment, with congestion tax and insurance rates.

two week party, haven't heard that before

on my shiny specialised bicycle

I like how they have put specialised instead of the make, Specialized.

screw that just get a Lexus RX400h

its got a whacking great 3.5liter V6, but wait, its got a hybrid drive system that actually makes accelerating faster and is pretty much useless on its own.... but you dont have to pay conjestion charge.

barmy or what.

man in a 1.4TDi polo has to pay more than a man driving a 3.5 V6 hybrid because the hybrid drive is somehow amazingly green.

Oh noes, how shocking!!!1one!111

If you'd ever lived in a big city you'd see that a bike or public transportation makes much more sense. You'll be there quicker with a car but you'll search for a parking spot half an hour as well.

And yes, 4x4's do make no sense there. The only purpose I can think of is as a status symbol. If that's what you're after fine with me.

And finally Global Warming. What exactly is wrong being concerned with our impact on Earth? Exactly, nothing at all.

This thread is against any common sense and that's what astonishes me the most. Do you really think all the TG presenters really are "Screw everything" types even off camera?

Cycling in London is suicide. My colleagues mother was run over by a lorrie (been cycling in London for decades) just before Christmas and died on the spot. I would cycle in London, if the cycle lanes would be a bit more than a bit of green paint on the road. In other countries there are proper cycle lanes which are on the same level as the pavement, which means that car contact is very rare.

^ Something like what they have in New York, which is essentially a separate, narrow road?

I got that image of London too, probably just because of all the Jeremy Clarkson influence.

Yeah its very sad how anti-car London is. I have an image of it in my head, but I'm sure its 10X worse in real life.

I don't blame Richard. It is London afterall, but look at what its doing to him :(

The problem with seperate lanes is that people tend to step on them and often you cannot avoid hitting them. Since you travel rather quickly on a bicycle the road is often the better option. Here people drive rarely on bicycle lanes even though they are just a bit of paint on the road.
I think everybody who cycles through big cities has had near hits, hits and falls, it is dangerous, but there has always been a price for being faster. If you want to be safe take a car, if you want to be safe and green take the bus or tube.

The Labour Government is completely anti-car. I suspect part of it is down to the freedom one gets from owning a car. This government has done all it can to curtail personal freedom. We live in a Nanny State: do this it's good for you; don't do that it's bad for you and we will know if you do it because there are ****ing cameras everywhere. Ken Livingstone, The Mayor of London, is a total wanker. He is of course is a former Labour MP. Basically, the idea is to screw motorists time and time again.

The fact that Richard has to travel around the capital on a bike suggests that the Congestion Charge has failed to remove cars from the road.

I'm sorry, but that's nonsense. I lived in Germany for 23 years, and it was very rare that people steped on the cycle lanes while walking in their designated area. I'd rather look for pedestrians straying on my lane than trucks or busses.
Some roads in London get very narrow at rush hour because of building up traffic, and it's the busses and trucks that can't help it but end up on the cycle lane. If Ken wants Londoners to use bikes then he should invest in proper cycle lanes so that people can finally feel save while being green!

I don't see the problem in riding a bike, it doesn't mean you're not a petrol head. You can still love cars and cycle; I don't know where you all get the idea that the two are mutually exclusive.

I know a bike courier there - and I would not follow him through Westminster
