When I first heard "Where Is The Love" by the Black Eyed Peas I thought it sounded very similar to "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia, which was released much earlier. I mentioned this to a few of my friends but they all thought I was weird/had no life. Anyways, I found a mash-up of the two songs that finally rests my case! But first, here are the two songs by themselves:

And now a link to a mash-up:

they have nothing in common with eachother... and natalie is smoking hot

Anyone musically inclined care to comment? Pay attention to the chorus.

I don't see any similarities there either. Can you describe in which ways you see those two songs connected? The beats are different, the singing is different, the melodies are different, and so are the lyrics.

Oh, and the fact that they can be mixed together doesn't mean much. MTV Mash mixes the weirdest stuff, which has nothing to do with each other whatsoever.

Same chords perhaps? Like E B Cm A. Then again, maybe all pop music uses the same chords:

.....ok so you just proved yourself wrong and posted a really gay vid of some douche trying to sing... if you keep it up, you might get promoted..

That video proves my point. Both songs not only use the same chord structure (E B Cm A), they use the same chords!

intro.mp3 - 0.16MB

combined.mp3 - 0.62MB

I think the bass lines are confusing, that's why people think they are totally different songs. "Torn" has a strumming-type bass line - playing the same four notes continuously, while the BEP song uses a walking-type bass line. The background singing (choir) in "Torn" and the string section in "Where is the Love" are exactly the same.

I guess I listen to music differently :dunno:

Yeah, I can hear a similarity. I checked some chords, and they both seem to use the same ones in the chorus, F C Dm Bb

Maybe it's the bass line or arrangement, but it's not something I would have picked up if you hadn't pointed it out.

btw, torn wasn't by natalie imbruglia originally, it was by a danish singer, can't remember her name atm.
