Merely minutes after the Pontiac Solstice roadster was launched, members of the media and the public alike were asking if General Motors had planned to build a hardtop version. Last year, GM's head car guy, Bob Lutz, said that a coupe was an almost sure thing, and now the automaker is rumored to have the coupe ready at some point in 2008, sooner than was previously expected.

According to Automotive News, the hardtop Solstice will usher in boosted performance expected to be carried into the roadster. Pontiac will stick with four-cylinder engines; any development on a V6 for the cars has been shelved. The V6 engines GM was developing would have been too heavy for the car's balance, according to insiders familiar with the program.

The Solstice will carry on Pontiac's performance line, as the GTO is officially off of the tables for at least the short term.

I hate to say it, but that is quite the attractive little number (save for the front...I still much prefer the Sky).

As much as I DIDN'T like it, this looks a lot like the Itallian Mustang concept...more than just the color.

Those are very old concept shots. But I'm looking forward to the coupe.
I just wonder if it'll cost more or less then the drop top version.

Looks awkward as hell in the back.

I know but it is highly likely that the coupe will look something like the concept.

I'm starting to like small convertibles that are turned into hardtop coupes. First the MGB GT, then the Z3 and Z4 M's and now this. It looks great even if it is an outdated concept! I really hope they make it since we're pretty lacking in fun small coupes here in the States.

Possibly. Or just a normal Solstice with a hard roof.

I think it's funny that the Solstice uses a lot of parts bin pieces, like the GMC Envoy fog lamps, but now the Envoy is going out of production, so the Solstice will be the only GM vehicle using those lights.

Lutz actually said specifically that they would not do that for a production Solstice coupe.

I say don't bother with the N/A four-cylinder engine; it's useless. Give it the turbo 2.0L and it will fly off the lots.

Well thats a bummer because an "FRC" version of the Solstice would rock.*

*FRC is Fixed Roof Coupe, in reference to the C5 corvette's based on the convertible with a fixed hard top. The C5 Z06 was a "FRC" technically.

I believe they sell a roof to racers.

That's foul :S

Not quite what I was talking about. Though a hardtop convertible would be a nice improvement on the car.

The "FRC" vettes were Corvette convertibles with the hard top not just mounted back actually a structural part of the chassis. They did this to stiffen the chassis (I think I read a 20% over the regular hard tops), which is why it was the basis for the Z06.

Or you could get that...which doesn't look as good but has a Nomad Concept look.

My dad is thinking about getting this for the winter and the early spring/late fall.

Personally I like the Sky one. The more squared edges seem more fitting on a hatchback than the Solstices curves.

god damn why do they publish images of the car in such a horrible color? I had thought the solstice was just the ugly cousin of the sky until I saw a couple in decent colors.

Oh my, what's wrong with the back of it? The front looks quite nice but that back's just horrid!

OMG...........you never know what's in the mind of an american car designer.:wall:

...........worry about fat ppl not being able to get in the car and sue them? the tail just look epic.

Let's hope it doesn't turn out that way.
